Dyslexia

During the years when I developed the curriculum for JustREAD and JustWrite, I studied methods to include in the ToolBox. The ToolBox holds a collection of booklets that take students back to Reading Readiness and builds on each basic skill one step at a time. At the time, I worked with teachers from Armstrong School and teacher training in the Ravenswood School District in California.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified with a California Lifetime Certificate. I taught in Cleveland, Ohio, for two years, and in South San Francisco for two years, followed by substituting in grades K-6. I tutored for many years with Pacific Island Outreach, Reading Partners and JustREAD.

Grammar

After discovering what reading and writing skills your student missed in school, I'll go back to the fundamentals and we'll build these skills grade by grade in a structured way. These skills include spelling, parts of speech, verb agreement, Latin roots, syllable and synonyms. These skills are necessary to reading, writing, understanding and are the foundation for life-long learning enjoyment.

Phonics

As co-founder of YES Reading, now Reading Partners and of JustREAD, I have years of experience extensively studying phonics. For JustREAD's curriculum, I developed the ToolBox used with students, grades K - 12. I am now retired, but continue to help JustREAD with its curriculum.

SAT Reading

My curriculum covers the many varied aspects of SAT preparation. This curriculum is used with middle and high school students who are recommended by their teachers and counselors for one-on-one tutoring. It includes comprehension, grammar, punctuation, verbal agreement, paragraph writing and essay writing.

The materials used are of personal interest to each individual student and are age appropriate. I fill the gaps in their learning.

SAT Writing

Each student is provided a customized plan for learning how to read and write. Preparation for the SAT includes structured writing appropriate to age and interest. Tutoring emphasizes the skills necessary to pass the test: comprehension, grammar, punctuation, verbal agreement, and how to write one good paragraph. The goal is to write a 5-paragraph essay with ease and enjoyment, a first step toward life-long learning.

Writing

I provide a professional approach to learning to write. A structured curriculum is used, beginning with writing a good basic simple sentence, and progressing to the point of being comfortably able to write an interesting 5-paragraph essay. I emphasize skill areas where remedial work is needed. The key is to enjoy the process.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
