I graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Sociology. I have taught students ranging from Pre-K to fifth grade. I have taken and passed the CBEST. I have taken and passed the CSET Multiple Subject. I have also taken and passed the RICA exam. I am pursuing my Master's of Arts in Teaching with a multiple subject credential at Biola University. I am also in the process of getting my Bilingual Authorization in Mandarin.

When I teach math, I encourage students to find the answers themselves by helping them through the thought process. I especially enjoy teaching Algebra I.

For reading, writing, grammar, and test prep, my goal is to teach the fundamental skills so that my students can succeed outside of my tutoring sessions.

I have been using Microsoft Office for over 10 years; in fact, I would say that I've been using general computers since elementary school. I am experienced in both Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2007. In addition to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint, I also have experience using Quick Books. Prior to becoming a Sociology major, I was an accounting major and did bookkeeping as an administrative assistant to a CPA. In addition, I recently did the bookkeeping for the real estate company I worked for. My approach to teaching computers is to teach the task once and allow my student to be hands-on during the rest of the session.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Of all of the mathematics subjects this is my favorite topic to teach. I believe that Algebra 1 is a foundation for all higher level mathematics. Over the years I have learned how to make Algebra fun and accessible even for struggling learners.

Chinese

I speak fluent Mandarin. I can teach Pinyin and Zhuyin. I prefer to read and write in traditional Chinese. I have passed a college level Chinese 3 course. I can teach/tutor from Beginning Chinese to Chinese 2.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught Pre-K to 5th grade in classroom settings. My experience includes being a teacher's aide to a K-5 special education class, co-teaching courses, private coaching for speech and spelling bee, volunteering at winter retreat as a teacher's aide, teaching Pre-K to 3rd grade bible classes, and leading worship for Pre-K to 5th grade students. I passed the CBEST in 2010 am currently working on getting my Multiple Subject Credential.

Elementary Math

Of all the elementary subjects, Math is by far my strongest area. I can use various approaches to help students to grasp concepts in mathematics. I am extremely passionate in helping children to understand mathematics because I see elementary mathematics as crucial to helping children to develop life skills.

Phonics

I am currently at BIOLA University studying to get my Multiple Subject Credential. I have taken a class in Elementary Reading and have passed the Reading Instruction Competency Assessment (RICA) which is required by the state and covers phonics instruction. Through my program, I have had in classroom observation and experience for reading and phonics instruction.

Piano

I have played piano all my life. I took lessons as a child, but now I play piano as a hobby. I believe that piano is fundamental if you want to play any instrument or if you want to sing. I can teach basic to Level 2 piano.

In this post I am going to talk about a method I've found in teaching computers as well as talking about the place I believe is the best place to tutor. First, for teaching computers, whether Microsoft Office, General Computers, or other computer software is to really allow your students to be hands-on. Similar to my approach to teaching math I like to challenge my students to find the solution... read more
