I really enjoy tutoring students individually and in small groups, because improvement comes quickly. I try to discover each student's individual learning style and present lessons that are geared to the way a student learns. Everything should be part serious and part fun in order to make lovers of learning out of all students.

As a California credentialed teacher, I have had a variety of experiences. I worked for a private learning center for two years, and I have been a substitute teacher and tutor in both elementary and adult education. I have experience tutoring beginning and academic reading, academic writing, and math up to and including pre-algebra. I have also prepared students to take the GED test.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

My teaching credential is a California Elementary Education credential with supplementary authorization in Science. My degree is in Biology which was interesting because I had to take classes dealing with evolution.

I am a lifelong conservative Christian and am familiar with the Bible, it's books and their locations. I have many study books in my collection so that I can find information in the Bible if I am not familiar with the subject. I have been able to help students from Catholic private schools with there Religion homework. I enjoy discussing questions and assignments with the students.

CBEST

I had to take the CBEST before beginning my studies to earn my teaching credential. Since it is a test of basic skills I found it quite easy. The test includes reading, mathematics, and writing. Some of these skills are not as good in today's students as they once were and a brush up before taking the test is a great idea.

Elementary (K-6th)

With a California Credential in Elementary Education I have taught students in grades
pre-Kindergarten through adult education. I have tutored for two companies in the past with emphasis on reading, writing, and math. And I have also taught English as a second language.

My experience has mainly been at the Kindergarten through 6th grade level. I have tutored beginning reading, academic reading, academic writing, and math through pre-Algebra. Beginning reading includes a heavy emphasis on phonics. Academic reading includes continuing phonics if necessary but with an emphasis on how to read textbooks and comprehend the material in them. Academic writing starts with simple essay writing and may go as far as learning to write term papers. I have a degree in Biology so I can also tutor science with confidence. I have taught all subjects at Elementary School level and can assist students in any of those subjects. I have also tutored two special needs students.

English

I was a straight A student in high school and college English. I also taught English and Writing at an area learning organization.

GED

I have the authorized study book for the GED, but students tell me that the test is harder. And one does have to study. The test includes a section in reading and a section where the student has to write a 5 paragraph essay. The math section includes all types of Math, some easy Geometry and Algebra included. The other sections address social studies and science.

Phonics

I am a California credentialed teacher in Elementary Education and have taken three college level classes in teaching reading. All three classes included methods for teaching phonics.

I have tutored students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in reading. Students in beginning reading programs, pre-K through 3rd grade, receive a heavy emphasis on phonics. Some of the older students are struggling with reading because they had never learned phonics properly. They are always given phonics exercises along with vocabulary and sentence structure, etc.

I feel that students cannot learn to read without a good phonics background. Phonics alone is not enough, but it is a key element in learning to read.

Writing

I have had some formal training in Academic Writing, in addition to a natural ability for reading and writing.

Many students have problems reading because they are not taught to use what teacher's call "decoding." Looking at a new word a student should use phonics to sound out the letters, divide the word into syllables, and determine the meaning by using the words around it. If all of these fail, the student should use a dictionary to look up the meaning and pronunciation of the word.

Diane is amazing. — Diane did such an amazing job with our niece. After assessing the current weak points in our nieces Math struggles, Diane crafted a customized plan to help her to catch up. Our niece brought her grades up from failing to B's and A's in a very short time. The money was very well spent. Diane was very attentive to finding any gaps in our nieces knowledge and working with her to fill those in. W ...
