Since high school, I tutored in the Math and Science fields, namely in Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics. I understand that textbooks and lectures aren't the most fun and interesting methods to teaching. From my experience and observations, if you don't see a reason to learn, you're not going to learn. For those reasons among others, I made it one of my goals to make use of more intuitive and interactive approaches without the hassle of simply memorizing facts and formulas that would otherwise make little to no sense. The best ways students tend to learn is by having two way communication between teacher and listener; for example the teacher isn't the only one talking, and by finding applications in real life, such as applying Physics to Martial Arts, and ironically by mistakes. I try my best to implement all three methods when possible to assure students the most out of their curriculum.
Currently, I am a second-year student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, working on my Bachelor's in Science for Physics and a minor in math. I have experience in all levels of Math and Physics, from middle school algebra to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations in math, as well as Physics subjects like Classical Mechanics, Electricity, Waves, and Quantum Mechanics. I was one of the top students in my Geometry course in school. One thing I found worked in my class is that I try to make sense of the material intuitively instead of just an equation. My class had practice by going through proofs, so we benefited more by applying the curriculum we learned.
I've been in the combat industry for 6 years and have seen traditional martial arts and modern self defense. From my experience in the technical aspects and sparring aspects, I noticed that what students learn in the dojo won't work in real time fights, where adrenaline is pumping and partners aren't cooperating. Not to mention in a real life scenario, the complex techniques go out the window once your adrenaline "flight or flight" response kicks in. I also considered the very likely chance of multiple armed opponents and the chance you yourself aren't fighting with 100% of your physical capabilities. The conclusion I drew was that most of what you'd learn in the dojo; the specific defenses, the forms/katas, and the types of conditioning doesn't prepare you for a real world scenario. The only physical way to respond to an unavoidable and inescapable violent encounter is by using violence. I developed a prototype system of my own dubbed "Combat Universal," where I debunk the myths of dojo martial arts and modern self defense systems out there. "Combat Universal" has a systematic method for anyone to utilize violence as a survival tool yet is adaptable to be personalized to a student's individual physicality and preferences. Most importantly, I teach ways to avoid confrontations and whatever I listed before is a last ditch resort, as taking another life isn't something any sane being deserves to deal with.
I took a class that solved problems using Python. We went from numerical calculations to modeling real life problems within the scope of 3 months. Within the class, I've learned that many programming languages are similar, just whether we know how to manipulate the format of the code and where each index starts. I understand that traditional teaching and studying methods don't always work and are sometimes straight up boring. It fails since one way communication only works with the speaker and not always the one supposed to learn the information. The best way people ingrain information themselves is if they can come up with the material on their own, or intuitively. There must be a two way teaching, like the saying of, "give a man a fish (information) or teach him to fish (intuitively." Simply memorizing doesn't help, as you'll most likely forget a few months later.
