Harvey Mudd College (B.S. Engineering)
Hello...My name is Dan and I have been a high school math teacher for the past 19 years since graduating from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont with a B.S. in Engineering (Class of '92). I taught 4 years at the Webb Schools (private high school in Claremont 1992-1996), 3 years at School of the Arts in San Francisco, and 12 years at San Leandro High School (near Oakland). I enjoy playing sports such as basketball, golf, tennis, softball...you name it. I especially enjoy watching a student learn...when the light bulb goes on and the expression on a student's face shows understanding. My style of teaching is to break a problem into smaller parts. I explain each of these smaller parts by teaching a lesson of a particular problem. I will check for understanding as I explain these smaller parts. I will then ask students to explain back the lesson to me. If they are able to do so, then I will have the student do a similar problem with different numbers. I am interested in students proving they have learned the material as opposed to just completing a problem. I am easy going, patient, and humorous while I teach/tutor. I cater the speed of the lesson according to the student's pace. I look forward to meeting you... I was so thankful when Dan reached out to me to offer to tutor my son in August. I was so impressed with his over 20+ years of teaching Math that I had him tutoring my son since the beginning of the school year in August 2014. I've held off putting any comments to this date because I was observing what type of impact he has on my son.
I've given him a 5 star-Excellent each time because I've seen how he was able to make each tutoring session a fun learning experience while teaching my son how to successfully analyze each math problem. But the most important lesson that Dan has taught my son is the confidence to deal with any math problem in class.
My son has turned into getting F's into getting B+'s in his math tests - a superb achievement to teach a high functioning autistic child. Dan has turned him from a student who has constantly struggled in Math into someone who now enjoys Math. My son now finds himself teaching other classmates who are confused in Math like he was before - an experience which according to him 'makes him very happy!'
My deepest gratitude to Dan for being the greatest tutor and teacher my son has ever had.
Dan is a great tutor with great vibes. He makes tutoring fun, I enjoy his math tutoring more than math class in school. He's fast in teaching and patient when you just can't seem to get a lesson right the first try. I'm glad my first experience with a tutor was a great one.
Dan is very patient and observant; he explains concepts very well, and is able to keep track of the areas you feel comfortable with and the one's you don't. I am very happy to have him as my tutor.
Dan did a phenomenal job of reviewing Algebra 1 with me in such a brief amount of time. As an educator who just needed a brief yet thorough review of the mathematical concepts related to Algebra, I was amazed at Dan's ability to easily weave in and out of the mathematical sequence. Dan is well versed in Algebra and I feel lucky to have found such an amazing tutor. I highly recommend him to everyone!
He was very patient and took extra time to make sure I understood the problems and what I was doing wrong.
Dan has worked with my daughter in Algebra II. He has been doing a great job explaining and demonstrating this complex subject matter to her. He not only went over the material but then asked her insightful questions to be sure she understood the subject material. I believe his engaging personality really helped make what could be a dry subject more fun for her. She is looking forward to her next study session Dan.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
