I have 20 years of teaching experience. I taught math
in middle school, as well as ESL
to adults. For the past nine years, I have home schooled my children, and helped develop curriculum and small classes in the homeschool
community. I am also a scout leader and active with the Maker community. I have a master's degree in education and have earned a teaching credential in physics
and a multiple subject teaching credential for lower grade levels. I also have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering
, so I have a strong math and science background.
Both of my children have dyslexia
, so I am familiar with helping children with learning differences use their strengths to succeed. I believe that all people have strengths and weaknesses, and I would be delighted to help any student find ways to learn that work for him or her. I am patient and able to help students stay focused on the task at hand. I am also good at breaking down overwhelming learning tasks into bite-sized chunks which helps students learn at a pace that is challenging but doable.
I am able to help students in any subject area at the K-8 levels. I can also help in many subjects at the high school level, including math. Having taught ESL in the past, I would be thrilled to work with children or adults to teach English
as a Second Language
. Home schoolers, I'd be happy to help you put together a small class built around your needs. Please email
me for rates.
All sessions take place in my home in downtown San Jose.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you have success in your studies!
From a parent of former students from a small group science class:
"I highly recommend Angie as a teacher. Angie taught both of my children in science and then in chemistry
. I noticed that Angie had a wonderful rapport with her students, both children and teens. She adapted to the various ages and pace of learning. I appreciated the fact that Angie recognized the various needs of my children and provided an ideal learning environment. Her classroom allowed flexibility for their different learning styles. For example, my daughter could sit still, follow exact instructions and be serious about what she was learning and experimenting with. Meanwhile, my son was able to stand and move around, tweak and be creative with his experiments and make his own theories and find his own solutions. Angie's classes allowed for exploration of what was being learned, the children were encouraged to take a topic or concept (for example static electricity or condensation) and find new ways to explore it, there was freedom to change variables and test the outcomes. I felt that Angie was organized and well prepared for her classes especially those that had labs and experiments, Angie has a talent for engaging her students in real world discussions, she applied what was being learned into every day life. Angie would motivate her students to ask questions about the topic being learned and to think outside the box. She was well like by both of my children and I recommend Angie without reservation."
