San Jose State University (B.A. Linguistics)
Hello there! My name is Anastasiya, Asya for short. I am a student at San Jose State University majoring in linguistics with a TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) concentration, and I will graduate in Spring 2015. After graduation, I plan to study abroad in Japan for a year and be an English professor's assistant through the JET Program, and continue to graduate school after then, aiming for University of San Francisco.
From July 2013 to July 2014, I have had experience tutoring one-on-one with an ESL adult student through a San Jose City Library program called Partners in Reading, a non-profit organization aimed at exposing adult English learners to the English language in all areas - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - with particular focus on adult literacy. At SJSU, I have worked as an Assistant Student Coach, working with six freshman remedial English students towards guiding them in writing and proofreading their semester essays in conjunction with their remedial English professors, as well as helping them understand the importance of reading and successfully engaging readers of their work.
Currently, I tutor two ESL students in a one-on-one session 10 days a month. I look forward to keep expanding my skills as an ESL tutor for my future goals of being a classroom instructor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Studying TESOL at San Jose State University. Currently serve as a volunteer ESL instructor with an adult student, and have tutored freshmen college students in writing essays and helping with grammar, vocabulary, and coherence.
Since July of 2013, I have been tutoring one-on-one with an adult in her early 30s. We meet for 3 hours a week, 2 days a week, to go over basic and intermediate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
I have been tutoring basic reading comprehension and writing skills, as well as intermediate and advanced levels. I really enjoy reading and writing and enjoy helping students perfect their reading and writing skills.
I have experience proofreading college-level English students' papers at my university, San Jose State, as part of a contract job.
Writing is one of my strengths and interests in the field of English language, and I enjoy helping others write strong, engaging papers. I seriously focus on grammar and vocabulary usage that, when used correctly, directly improve written text. My goal is for students to make such improvements, first with my guidance and later on their own.
