Hi, my name is James. I am an experienced, patient, and personable tutor of science, mathematics, software, and technology.
Science: I have had the pleasure of serving as a high school science chair teaching chemistry and physics. I have also taught general science from 7th to 9th grades.
Math: I have taught high school algebra 1 and 2 as well as trigonometry. I have also had fun teaching 7th and 8th grade math classes. In college, I have taught algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus. I’ve also spent time in the math tutoring lab in a local college.
Technology: I have taught Java and C++ to students and working engineers and prepared and taught courses in image processing, computer architecture, and color science. My experience is rich in that I have not only taught my subjects but also used them in industry as a researcher and developer. I have been told, "Not only am I impressed with your depth of knowledge but also with your ability to take such a difficult subject and make it so simple and understandable." I have excellent reviews from my former students and will share them upon request.
I love the subjects which I teach and the personal attention I can give my students as a tutor.
Thanks for reading my profile.
I have several years experience teaching algebra at the high school level and have also had the pleasure of working as a tutor in the mathematics tutoring lab at CSULA. Since I have also worked as a researcher and developer in corporate America, I can easily share the relevance of algebra in the technical workplace. Yes, I have used high school algebra in my research. I have a B.A. in mathematics plus 90 graduate units and a B.A. in chemistry.
I have several years experience teaching algebra 2 at the high school level and have also had the pleasure of teaching the equivalent course at the college level. My experience is not only in the classroom but also as a tutor in the mathematics tutoring lab at CSULA. Since I have also worked as a researcher and developer in "corporate America", I can easily share the relevance of algebra in the technical workplace. Yes, I have used high school algebra in my research.
I have worked for JPL, Dataproducts, and Adobe Systems as a computer scientist. In that capacity I wrote and maintained programs written in C. These programs were large code bases such as those used for Photoshop, etc. I have more than 20 years of experience in using computer programming languages.
I have written and maintained very large code bases in C++ and Java for Adobe Systems. I have more than 20 years of experience in computer science. I wrote code for Photoshop, core technologies, and the PDF Print Engine.
I have taught Chemistry at several high schools and enjoyed it greatly. I also enjoy watching the light go on when my students get those problems they thought were tough. I have had the pleasure of being a high school Science Chairman, teaching and designing the chemistry curriculum. I also have work experience as a Medical Lab Tech running blood chemistry tests. My education includes a B.A. in chemistry, a B.A. in mathematics plus 90 graduate units in pure and applied mathematics. I absolutely love science.
I have over 30 years of experience programming computers of various capabilities. I am experienced in writing assembly code for microprocessors as well as coding in PLM, PL-I, C, C++, Java, and PERL. I am also capable of scripting for Unix/Linux shells.
I have years of experience with not only the software and applications that run on computer systems but also the hardware. I have written a pc bios, scientific computing and control applications for a jet propulsion laboratory. I am familiar with the Office applications from Microsoft as well as their compilers. I can describe the action of bus cycles on Intel microprocessor chips. I generally know computers inside and out but can make understanding them simple.
I have taught geometry at several high schools and enjoy this part of the curriculum especially. This is because my graduate work was in mathematical logic (which fascinates me). Geometry is the first high school experience a student has with logic as an explicit part of mathematics. My deep understanding of logic allows me to make Geometry simple and understandable.
I not only have extensive work experience using Java in products with large code bases, but I also have experience designing and giving classes to students from high school to working engineers wanting to learn the subject. I have also mentored several interns in the use of Java as they progress through their engineering careers.
During my undergraduate study, I took full quantifier calculus including identity and description in the philosophy department and mathematical logic in the mathematics department. During my graduate studies, I have taken two semesters of Godel-Bernays set theory in the philosophy department and one full year of Zermelo Fraenkel Set theory, including decidability and completeness theory in the mathematics department. I continue to study order relations and order theory on my own.
