My name is Sherinda from San Jose. I currently work as an Instructional Associate at a High School, in the English and Special Education departments. I teach reading comprehension, writing, grammar and creative writing to freshman and sophomores. I also have experience tutoring English learners as well as college-level young adults. In the classroom setting there is always a push to complete certain tasks before the bell rings. However, tutoring students after school (one on one or in small groups) provides a more relaxed atmosphere where I can really target individual needs. It has also been a rewarding experience because I get to bond with my students and create friendships with them as well as their parents.
I have a degree in Music and Business from Cal Poly Pomona. I have completed many scholastic trainings that allow me to use Read 180 and System 44 programs (used to build phonics andreading skills)efficiently.
Also,I have a love for poetry, singing, music production and reading.
I am a patient listener, versatile and I am committed to helping students become confident and successful in English class or in any class. My co-workers and friends often comment on how they admire my calm demeanor. I believe you must keep a level-head in stressful situations; without a doubt, a high school freshman classroom can be one of those! I've also learned to pick my battles and to not take things personal. Often times my students are battling issues that are beyond their classroom experience.
My job is to remain positive and persistent while teaching imperative skills, reminding students not to give up when they become frustrated. Instead, let's take our time and work together until things become clear.
