ESL/ESOL

As a former ESL student and an ESL teacher, I learned what it takes to overcome the English language barrier and how to teach ESL students to achieve their goals. These experiences taught me the clear understanding of students' needs in learning the new language. When I was teaching ESL at CalCC, I emphasized primarily on practicing conversations and word usage to build students' confidence because they told me that they were afraid to speak English to English speakers. One student ran into the bathroom when the phone rang. This student doesn't run to anywhere anymore. This lesson was very productive.

Teaching English usage is very crucial to English learners. A good car doesn't mean a nice car. Solo doesn't mean a single person. I found these misleading phrases in the students' speeches and wrings. Just like teaching idioms, I explained to them thoroughly with examples so they can understand. Being a dual cultured tutor helps in teaching ESL students.

Learning English as second language is a long and hard journey, but the right teacher is the key to success.

Korean

My native language is Korean, and I've been educated in both Korea and the United States. I've earned a master's degree in San Jose, and am currently working as a translator for various people's communication needs. Anybody can read and write Korean in just one lesson, but it takes a lot of conversational practice. The language is so different than the European languages. In the Korean alphabet, there are no distinction in sound between "F" and "P" and "R" and "L". Also, there are so many synonyms that makes difficult to the language learners. However, it is possible...with time, effort and a native tutor.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
