All of Peter’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Peter’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Dutch

I was brought up in Flanders, a center of Dutch culture. I have taught Dutch and Flemish to Americans on numerous occasions. My speaking skills are up to international standards and I have written and submitted a number of Dutch presentations on high-tech subjects.

I was responsible for worldwide PR at Philips Semiconductors and was active in preparing all publications for the multi-million dollar company, so I have the business and personal contacts.

I teach by example and working from a decent textbook with constant repetition of the vocabulary and pronunciation which is so critical to the student's confidence. In French for example, I adapt each lesson not just to the student but also around current issues.

Dutch is a complicated language for Anglo-Saxons to master because it sits just between German and English, the sentence structure is German, the actual syntax is modern without declensions.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English in Europe to French and Dutch speaking students

European History

Having lived in Belgium from 1952 to 1976, I understand and teach European history with a hands on approach. The dates and places come alive with local accents and concepts. I will use any textbook or syllabus that the student requires and will work as closely or as loosely to the curriculum as needed.

French

I was educated in Belgium, and have taught French to executives and students age 7 to 24. I have written a number of proposals and prepared presentations for senior executives in that language. I continue to study French and am specializing now in medieval French. I teach vocabulary, conversation, translation, syntax and introduce students to the culture of France and Quebec.

Public Speaking

Speaking in a public venue can be a challenge, but it is easily overcome by preparation and training. I have coached a number of senior executives to present to audiences and to talk to the media. There are simple ways to improve and certainly to alleviate the natural fears that the unknown can generate. Job interviews, financial presentations, sales calls and conferences are examples of what I have done personally and what I have trained others to do.

World History

Although it is true that those who ignore the lessons of history may be forced to repeat them, those who never learned anything from their past have a very boring future. No matter what you pick up from history, it will always be with you and following a sequence of events from a time that is now gone and watching that sequence unravel again is an incredible experience. I teach history in context, great battles do not just happen, they are assembled very carefully, economic events can be traced and watching the traces is what real historians do and enjoy.

Writing

I am a journalist in the narrow field of high technology and a published writer in biofuels and renewable energy sources. My first real job was a reporter for the old UPI news agency and I have maintained my writing skills by daily blogs and other activities.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
