I am a former high school English teacher who gave up teaching for a long career as a technical editor. As an editor, I was able to apply my teaching skills to my own work, which included helping writers learn proper spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

While working for a major telecommunications company, I voluntarily mentored software engineers from Asian countries. I taught them to speak clearly and help them to understand English. I also edited their documents, both on paper and in direct discussion, which resulted in greatly improved writing skills. All were very appreciative, and several made sure that my manager knew what I had accomplished.

I do not work with students younger than 16; older students are usually much more willing than younger people to work hard learning to speak, read, and write English as a second language.

In addition, I am unable to tutor on Saturdays and Sundays because that is the only time I can be with my grandchildren.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

In the 1950's, while still a student, I had the opportunity to teach a group of 12 Hungarian refugees to read and speak English. With no common language available, I used a picture book showing ordinary day-to-day items with an English captions beneath them. We both read and spoke each word so they could learn to use both skills. After about two weeks, I began speaking to them in English by asking them to identify the pictures. By the end of the month, we were able to speak enough English together to enable them to go off on their own.

More recently, I spent approximately 10 years training people to speak English as a second language. As a professional editor, I worked closely with numerous software engineers who came to the U.S. from countries in Asia. Although it was not part of my job, I spent a lot of time teaching them to speak English clearly so they could communicate with other English-speaking employees. Their improved speech helped them to develop easily understood content for the technical manuals that accompanied their programs. As a result, both writers and editors were able to work closely with them to make sure that users from all over the world could understand the content of the manuals.

Proofreading

Proofreading is one of the most important tools people need to ensure that anything they write is spelled and punctuated correctly. I frequently see major errors in newspapers and magazines, as well as in dissertations, articles, and contracts that I proofread. By learning to proofread one's own writing, people can be sure that they won't be embarrassed by their mistakes.

Writing

Before I became a technical editor, I was an English teacher in a high school. I spent 5 years teaching English before I left to raise two children. When I wanted to return to teaching, schools were cutting back and actually eliminating teachers. That's when I decided to become a technical editor and proofreader. I worked on both military and technical documents and received praise from all my managers.

I have continued to proofread whenever the opportunity arose, and I expect to continue for many more years.
