I am a California credentialed teacher with a Master's Degree in Teaching and Education from USC. In 2010, I earned my Bachelor of Science from Cal Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo. I love teaching others about this subject and want to create enthusiasm for the sciences with every student! I have 3 years of tutoring experience. Along with Biology, I am comfortable tutoring students in Chemistry.
Although I obtained my degree in Biology, I am also proficient in tutoring Chemistry, English, History, Algebra I/II, and Geometry. I am excellent at proofreading papers and teaching vocabulary in a fun and interesting way.
I also have played piano for more than 15 years, and can teach students basic or intermediate skills. I also have some knowledge of musical theory. Please note, however, that I do NOT have a degree in Music or Music Theory, but am a very experienced and accomplished pianist.
My tutoring style: I want students to feel comfortable asking questions about topics they did not understand in class, so I try to make a very relaxed environment. I also want students to enjoy doing their homework, because I feel that this creates a stronger sense of confidence in the classroom. My typical student is in high school or middle school. Unfortunately, at this time I am not taking students in Elementary school.
If we begin lessons, then you agree to the following policies I have, discussed BEFORE lessons have started.
1) Minimum time for a lesson is 1 hour. You will be charged for one hour even if the lesson is less than one hour.
2) I reserve the right to change my rates at any time. You will be notified prior to the rate change.
3) Please cancel lessons at least 24 hours in advance. If the lesson is not canceled before this period, I will charge for the ENTIRE lesson. (Ex: If lessons usually run and hour you will be charged an hour).
Ecology is one of the most long studied subjects in Biology, but scientist still feel that they know little about it because of the necessity for long studies to determine any basic principles. Ecology is just one of the many ways Biology students learn to interpret nature. To graduate in Biology, it was required that at least two classes (one lower division and one upper division) were taken and passed. However, like genetics, many other classes incorporated this subject such as Plant Ecology, Mammology, Ornithology, and Herpetology.
Genetics is probably one of the most important subjects a biology student can take because it is corner stone to a myriad of other subjects. Although there was a separate Genetics course, this subject was incorporated into many other areas of study including but not limited to: Immunology, Virology, Cell Biology, Plant Biology, Evolution, Physiology, Anatomy, Histology, Hematology, and Biochemistry. Thus, I have studied this subject not just in one class, but over the entire course of my career as a biology student. Because of this, I feel that I am qualified to tutor this subject
Piano is one of my great passions! I have played piano for over 16 years and have taken lessons for 10 of those 16 years. These lessons included practical knowledge of musical vocabulary and theory. I also took music theory classes in college. I am a very accomplished classical pianist, but I did not undergo a certification program when I was learning to play. I also do not posses a degree in Music of Music Theory.
If you want your child to become a concert pianist, then I am not the right teacher. However, if you want your child to learn the basics of piano, music theory, and love music in general then I am right for you!
Rates: $20/45min. Piano must be supplied (full electric keyboard okay) as well as music books. Extra sheet music, musical dictionary, music note flash cards, and theory books will be provided by myself.
I went to an Episcopalian school grades K-8th and then a Catholic school for grades 9-12. I am most versed in Christian/Catholic Theology, but I am very comfortable with other leading World Religions as I have taken several religious studies classes and have studied them in various historical contexts.
