Dear Learner ~ I believe a good match makes all the difference. I bring my own love of learning and a joy in supporting you to achieve new levels of understanding and competency in your areas of concentration. I am dedicated to making our time together fun, interesting and rewarding - setting clear goals with generous positive reinforcement.

I tutored through The Buddy System in San Francisco in 2007 and 2008 working with elementary and middle school to high school level students. I led a small classroom of elementary students for a school year with The Learning Cooperative in Hotchkiss, Colorado in 1997 - 1998, working with a small but diverse group of students with individual learning styles - building lesson plans designed to include the needs of seven year old Ursula who has autism. I taught small classes highlighting creative writing, grammar and structure in the course of sharing imaginative and informative stories and essays with middle school students attending Colorado Creative Education in Paonia, Colorado school year 1995 - 1996.

At the center of my approach is discovering what each student is naturally excited about in his or her life - movement, music, friends, nature. We will highlight this central interest in our time together, reading, writing and presenting on these themes, learning to confidently convey one's strongest interests in vibrant language.

With adults, I most enjoy working with people who are eager to gain confidence and proficiency presenting themselves in their chosen career and in the world. I have an enormous love of languages and have worked as an ESL instructor with a Spanish speaking community in Western Colorado in 1992. With a strong background in classical English and grammar, I delight to share the nuances of English with those for whom English is a second language. Currently I am continuing to work on my level of mastery with public speaking through weekly presentations through the organization called Speaking Circles here in San Francisco.

When working with all ages I believe it is essential to include warm up exercises that activate the whole brain, full body practices to engage the entire nervous system in the learning experience. I found that this method increases our capacity to relax and absorb new concepts while helping to build new neural pathways, increasing attention and facilitating retention.

I look forward to working with you or with your student. Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Through my high school and college years I studied oral interpretation of literature, debate and public speaking. For several years, I have enjoyed sharing my original performance art and poetry at community events and poetry festivals.

For twenty years in Colorado, I was a public radio programmer DJ, interviewer and radio producer. My speaking evolved over two decades in front of the radio microphone on a weekly basis, reaching thousands of listeners in a wide broadcast area.

In the San Francisco end-of-life community in which I volunteer, I currently lead workshops for volunteer trainings and staff retreats. I facilitate in-service workshops on listening, grieving, personal dynamics and team building.

With a background in recognized public speaking organizations and methods, I am currently engaged with an ongoing group practice in which we focus on mastering the art of speaking from the energy of our own truth, transparency and presence.
