I've worked as a writing tutor for more than seven years. I specialize in creative writing, essays, college applications, and standardized test prep.

From 2012 to the present, I've tutored at a San Francisco company, One Smart Kid. I've worked with a wide range of students from elementary to high school. In addition to writing and general academic tutoring, I've worked with students on the SSAT, SAT, ACT, HSPT and other standardized tests.

During 2010-2011, I served as the senior writing coach for the Learning Resource Center at the California College of the Arts. In this position I worked not only as a tutor, but also as an advisor and mentor.

During the summer of 2011 I was the teaching assistant and lead coach for CCA’s Summer English Intensive, an ESL-focused composition course for incoming international students.

During my undergrad at Black Hills State University, I tutored writing for all four years through the college's writing center.

Outside of teaching, I spend my free time gardening, biking, and writing fiction.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

During my undergrad I studied Plato, Aristotle, Homer, Horace, and Virgil both through classics classes and through literature classes. I also studied the theories of the ancients during drama class in my undergrad and screenwriting class during my MFA. Finally, I have extensive knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman world through undergraduate courses as well as private study.

College Counseling

Through my job at two local tutoring centers, I taught two college essay writing courses during the summer of 2013. In these classes I covered all of the essays needed and how to write them in detail. We also reviewed how to go through a college interview and what questions to ask during a tour. I've also advised a number of individual students on how and where to apply for college.

COOP/HSPT

For the last year at my current tutoring employment in San Francisco, I've tutored both the COOP and the HSPT. I've taught all sections of the tests along with overall study skills and test-taking strategies. Finally, I've taught both tests to individual students as well as to small classrooms of students.

ESL/ESOL

During my undergraduate degree, I took many classes on linguistics, history of the English language, and TESL.

From 2010 to 2011, I served as the senior writing coach for the Learning Resource Center at the California College of the Arts. During my MFA in creative writing at CCA, I primarily tutored ESL students. I worked with students with many different native languages and a wide variety of skill levels.

During the summer of 2011, I was the teaching assistant and lead coach for CCA’s Summer English Intensive, an ESL-focused composition course for incoming international students. During the first half of the summer, I lead high school and undergraduate students in across-the-Bay tours, helped them adjust to U.S. culture, and provided tutoring for their writing assignments.

At my current employment, I continue to work with many students learning English as a second language.

ISEE

For the last year at my current tutoring employment in San Francisco, I've tutored the ISEE extensively. I've taught all sections of the test along with overall study skills and test-taking strategies. Finally, I've taught the ISEE both to individual students as well as to small classrooms of students.

Public Speaking

During my undergraduate degree I took two courses on public speaking. Additionally, in the course of getting my English degree I was obligated to give speeches and presentations on a number of occasions, especially when presenting my senior thesis. Further, during my MFA I read my work on a monthly basis and in a number of my classes we focus on the principals of reading in public to improve our recitation. I continue to read my writing and essays at public events numerous times a year.

TOEFL

Leonard has gotten my children excited about writing! — We've had Leonard now for two writing sessions and the kids have already written some great paragraphs, better than they would have done previously. Plus they have learnt how to write "tankas." Leonard has tools up his sleeves from previous writing teaching experiences to get the children creative. We are enjoying the sessions so far and plan to extend the sessions into half-day summer camps for t ...
