I am a former professor of English at Skyline College where I taught for 20 years. I have tutored, and designed and presented workshops at several universities and colleges for the past 25 years. The major subjects I can help you with include: SAT, ACT, verbal sections of most standardized tests, Speed-reading, Study and Learning Skills, and Writing, Grammar, and Vocabulary Improvement.
I love my work and have been fortunate enough to be able to help thousands of people over the past decades become the best learners they can be. I have worked with people ranging from teens to adult professionals, from widely varying language and educational backgrounds.
I personalize all tutoring to meet your individual needs, goals, and skills. I write my own materials, supplementing them with the best available published materials, all included in my rate. I enable you to assess your strongest intelligences and learning styles, which you can apply to learning virtually anything. Also, I teach an anxiety reduction technique that can be used to reduce stress in any challenging situation. Finally, my programs cover nutritional preparation that empowers you to be at your brightest, most alert, and feel least hungry.
I work one-to-one, usually at my home office in Noe Valley where I can offer my best rates. I also work with groups of 2-4 people, working at a similar level, on many of the above subjects. Lengths of programs range from a minimum of 6 hours to ongoing for writing assistance.
I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in Psychology and did graduate work toward a Masters in Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. My credentials include: a Limited Lifetime Service Credential, Language Arts and Literature, from the San Mateo Community College District; and, a Lifetime Certificate for Adult Classes in Developmental and Rapid Reading from the San Francisco Community College District. My professional affiliations include the Higher Education Consultants' Association and the Western Association for College Admission Counseling.
I look forward to hearing from you and to planning together a program that will meet your goals.
I have taught and tutored standardized test prep for more than 25 years, including all sections of the ACT. My program for ACT English includes a comprehensive grammar review, an overview of all of the general and specific strategies for the various question-types, and other custom materials that I have written and compiled. My 20 years as an assistant professor of English at Skyline College included substantial work with students on planning, organizing, developing and supporting their essays. Finally, I have extensive experience working with students on timed essays for the ACT, SAT, GMAT, and CBEST.
I have passed the CBEST, passing all sections on my first attempt. My extensive experience in standardized test prep, covering 25+ years of teaching and tutoring, has included tutoring on all three sections of the CBEST. I have taught GMAT prep at Gonzaga University, SAT and ACT prep for Foothill-De Anza Community Education. In my test prep tutoring, I have worked extensively on all reading, writing and math sections.
During my 20 years as an assistant professor of English at Skyline College, I taught Writing Improvement, along with the complete series of Reading courses all of which included significant work on writing. I have worked with students from middle school through college on essays and papers that they have been assigned in their classes. This work includes assistance and suggestions on planning, organizing, and creating a comprehensive outline for a well-written paper. Finally, I provide instruction and feedback in the following areas: formulating an effective thesis, brainstorming strong main idea supports, creating thesis and main idea sentences, illustrating the main ideas with specific examples, and avoiding and correcting serious grammatical errors.
In my 20 years as an assistant professor of English at Skyline College, I designed and taught grammar courses to students who were mainly non-native speakers. In addition, I designed and taught grammar workshops at Foothill-De Anza Community Education. Furthermore, I have worked with clients from middle school through adult, tutoring them on grammar improvement and writing skills, and providing them with the best available grammar handbooks and resources. My 25+ years of teaching and tutoring standardized test prep include work on all three sections of the PSAT. I have taught PSAT prep for Foothill-De Anza Community Education, and I have tutored students on all sections of the PSAT and the SAT. My custom guide for the PSAT includes general multiple-choice strategies, and strategies for each of the sections and all of the different question-types. All work is done only on official PSAT tests, and I supplement this work with material I have created on anxiety reduction and nutritional prep. All PSAT tutoring programs are tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual.
I have taught reading, including speed-reading and comprehension improvement, for more than 30 years to clients ranging from middle school students to adults. I believe reading is the most valuable way to learn almost anything, and I love sharing this skill with everyone. My programs include numerous speed-reading techniques for various types of materials, pre-reading, recognizing main ideas and key facts for maximum comprehension, and learning to recognize and understand implied ideas. Reading fiction and reading information are radically different, but the effective techniques are essentially the same: reading is seeing and understanding the ideas on the page.
My 25+ years of teaching and tutoring standardized test prep includes work on all three sections of the SAT. I have taught SAT prep for Foothill-De Anza Community Education for 15 years, and I have taught reading at high school and college levels for more than 30 years. In addition, all work on test questions and essays is done using only official materials, supplemented by the best available SAT essay book. My SAT tutoring programs are tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual.
In my 25 plus years tutoring and teaching test prep, I have worked with a number of students on preparing for all sections of the SSAT. Since I usually begin working with 7th graders, we often work over the summer to bolster their subject matter knowledge of math and vocabulary. Typical results include increasing from the 36th to 62nd percentile and from the 27th to the 58th percentile. If students do not need to work on improving math or vocabulary, programs are significantly shorter in duration. My materials include my custom SSAT guide, the official SSAT prep guide, and the best supplementary materials for brushing up on subject matter knowledge.
I have taught study skills, often in conjunction with speed-reading, to people from middle school through graduate school levels. My experience includes seven years teaching speed-reading and study skills at secondary and college levels. In my 20 years as an Assistant Professor of English, I taught mainly reading courses that included study skills. Finally, I have many years experience privately tutoring study skills to students at middle school through graduate school levels.
