As an educator, helping students understand new and difficult material is not only what I do on a regular basis, it's what I love to do. I have over fifteen years of experience in tutoring and teaching math and science to various people, from children in middle school to graduate students. Over the years, I have also participated in various workshops, seminars, and conferences focused on learning styles and teaching methods, which has helped improve both my tutoring skills, as well as my enthusiasm to apply this information. I received my bachelor's degree in biology from UC Berkeley, and have a Ph.D. from Harvard. Having graduated from two highly-competitive universities, I also am experienced in the types of expectations and standards that are expected of their student population. This has given me insight into how to properly prepare students to be successful at attending such institutions of higher learning. I also have teaching experience at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State, and Harvard.
Through my many years of teaching and tutoring, I have found there to be a few basic principles that have proven to be productive. I believe in walking the students through the key concepts so they can gain a foundational understanding of the key concepts, rather than just memorizing the material. It's important that the students are able to use their new-found knowledge to think logically about the concepts such that one could determine whether a fact or conclusion makes sense. Beyond the material itself, I like to review the different study methods the students are using and offer new, personalized tips.
I hope to show my students the same patience and passion for learning that others have given to me. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
I have studied anatomy in many different ways, from the classroom to the lab bench. During college at UC Berkeley, I took several advance physiology and anatomy classes. Since then, many of the college classes I have taught have had a heavy-emphasis on human anatomy.
I have been tutoring students in the biological science for over a decade, and have been an adjunct professor for several college-level biology classes at the University of San Francisco and SF State. I obtained my Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University.
Throughout my studies and research I have gained a great knowledge of genetics. I received high grades in my genetics classes in both undergrad at UC Berkeley as well as in graduate school at Harvard. I was also a teaching assistant in for an undergraduate genetics laboratory at Harvard. Much of my post-grad research centered on mouse genetics and transgenics, which helped to solidify my foundations in the subject.
I have been using Excel for over a decade for classwork, lab work, and fun. I have used Excel as a database for organizing contact information, analyzing large scientific data sets, and creating clear visuals for presentations. I have helped other people learn how to use the many different formula functions, shortcut commands, and graphic capabilities.
As a professor, I use PowerPoint in my every day work. I have been using Power for over a decade for classwork, research, and presentations at international meetings. I have helped many of my student learn how to efficiently and effectively use both the basic and the less-known, more-advanced features of PowerPoint.
I have always been interested in the human body, which is why I completed several advance human physiology classes during college. Since then, I have taught several college-level human physiology classes. I have also done over a decade's worth of physiology-related lab research. In both the class and the lab, I have helped countless students understand and grow to love physiology.
I have successfully tutored many students in prealgebra throughout my years of tutoring. Prealgebra is a very foundational subject, so I think it is important to help my students gain a thorough understanding of the logic behind the math. I have completed many years of math education, through calculus. As a scientist, I continue to use this math every day within my job.
Most recently, I have edited several promotional and short documentary pieces for DVD and web distribution for the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC). I also worked several years as producing, hosting, crewing, and editing a public access tv show. As a result, I am familiar with many different types of editing software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Compressor, and Final Cut Pro 7. I have also completed several classes through the Motion Pictures and Television graduate program at the Academy of Art.
