I am a 25 year old talented and thoughtful tutor on his way to a career in medicine looking to help all ages, from 5th graders through college and beyond, develop tools for mastering math and science courses. A native San Franciscan, I graduated from Cathedral School for Boys in 2003 and St. Ignatius College Preparatory in 2007. I studied chemistry at Carleton College, graduating magna cum laude in 2011. I have also sat the MCAT, earning a score in the 90th percentile.
I have a long history of helping both fellow and younger students in math and the sciences. In high school, I was president of the Physics Club, a student organization devoted to tutoring fellow high school students in physics. In college, I tutored other students in organic chemistry. Once out of college, I tutored for an academic support and mentoring center, Classroom Matters, which has consistently earned the Parents Press "Best of the East Bay" accolades.
I am available to tutor the following courses:
Math: pre-algebra, algebra I & II, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, geometry.
Science: biology, chemistry, physics.
I am also available to tutor the AP versions of calculus, chemistry, and physics.
I have excelled at math since I was young and have also tutored the subject a number of times. I am a capable teacher who can intuitively understand both the math problems and the ways in which a student is struggling to comprehend the math.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Chemistry degree from a selective liberal arts college, Carleton College. I consistently scored in the top 5 percent of test takers in general chemistry and organic chemistry. I tutored organic chemistry my junior year and tutored more than 10 students in general chemistry my first year out of college. I recently completed a 1 year-long research assistantship in an environmental chemistry lab at UC Berkeley.
I have spent many years of my life studying and speaking Mandarin Chinese. I began studying the language in 3rd grade and continued through elementary and middle schools. I picked it back up again in college and earned a minor in Chinese. While in college I studied in a language intensive course in Beijing in the summer of 2008. Additionally, every summer in high school I traveled to China to teach English to middle schoolers.
My vast experiences with the Chinese language, from learning about it in a classroom to speaking it with friends I made in mainland China, afford me a unique perspective which would provide you or your child with a valuable tutoring experience.
I tutored Mandarin Chinese at my previous tutoring job at Classroom Matters in Berkeley. One of my students took Chinese at the high school level. I assisted him with his homework when he needed help and spent the rest of the time speaking with him.
Given that I was exposed to the language before hitting my teenage years, I have a particularly attuned ear to the tonality of the language. This is so true that the head of my language intensive program in Beijing said that I had "the best [spoken] tones in the class". This was a class of over 20 westerners with previous Chinese schooling who had traveled to China to learn the language.
So if you or your son or daughter would like to learn Mandarin Chinese, contact me and we will make it happen.
If you want to learn how to master the MCAT without spending thousands of dollars on a review course, look to me. In January of 2013 I took a practice MCAT cold and earned a 25. After 6 months, I sat the MCAT in a testing center and earned a 33. That's an improvement of 8 points, or a jump from the 50th percentile to the 90th percentile. And I did it all on my own.
I used a variety of tools, such as practice tests and review books, to study for the test. As your tutor, I will guide you in using these aids and teach you subjects that you find confusing or challenging.
My undergraduate degree is in chemistry, for which I spent much time using Excel. In addition, I just finished a year-long research position in a scientific lab in which I often used Excel's spreadsheets. I am familiar with the program and computers in general.
I took two quarters of Organic Chemistry in college, earning straight A's in each course. After that I tutored students at my college in Organic Chemistry for two quarters. In addition, I recently took the MCAT and relearned much of the Organic Chemistry I had learned in school.
I took two years of physics in high school, earning a 5 on AP Physics C: Newtonian Mechanics and a 4 on AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism. I took another physics course in college. I tutored physics at Classroom Matters in Berkeley and feel quite comfortable with the material.
Precalculus is my favorite math subject to tutor. I have excelled at the subject as a student and enjoy imparting that knowledge to students. I took honors precalculus in high school which eventually lead me to earning a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam.
I earned a 740 on the SAT math section while in high school. I excelled at math in high school and earned a hard science degree at a selective liberal arts college. I also recently took the MCAT and earned a 90th percentile score. So, I know my way around standardized tests. I am looking forward to helping high schoolers fight through the slog of the SAT by teaching them tools and strategies.
I earned a score of 750 on the SAT Critical Reading section when I took it in 2006. I have since earned a degree at a selective liberal arts college and worked as a tutor for those in both the sciences and humanities. I test well on standardized tests and can teach you how to improve your scores.
Fantastic tutor! — Andrew has been working with my daughter since March of her junior year, helping her with calculus, honors chemistry, as well as SAT tutoring. We were relieved to come across Andrew after going through 2 other tutors who had insufficient knowledge of the material to significantly help her. She and Andrew have been meeting weekly and sometimes semi-weekly with Andrew always being available and acco ...
