Hello, future photographers. I'm Gena, a graduate of San Francisco State's Photo Journalism program. I have worked as a newspaper staff photographer, and I've been fortunate enough to travel to India as part of a non-profit program aimed at helping young Indian women tell their stories through photography. Photography students learn best with hands-on experiential learning in the community. Photography is an art that allows one to become more connected with other individuals, understand one's community, and translate one's own experience to others. It is also an art rooted in math and science. An effective photographer must understand how to deftly control his or her equipment.

Our first lesson begins with an assessment of your strengths as a learner, and I tailor my teaching to meet those strengths. You will develop your understanding of camera mechanics, storytelling, use of natural and flash lighting, photo editing (traditional & digital), framing, and composition.

I look forward to imparting my love for photography to all my students!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Photography

I have a degree in journalism from San Francisco State University with an emphasis on Photojournalism. I am experienced working with DSLR, analog, large format and 35 mm format cameras. I am able to support students in lens use, aperture and shutter speed inverse proportions, and camera body functions. Additionally I can assist in digital and darkroom print production, and analog B&W film developing. I have worked as a professional photographer for the Lodi News Sentinel, as a freelancer for the Oakland Examiner, as a photo editor for Travel Muse, an analog photo lab assistant and abroad as a photography instructor in Karnataka India.
