I am a junior at Stanford pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international relations with a focus on international security and Middle East/Central Asia and minor in economics and management science and engineering. I was born in London and raised in New York City, where I attended The Spence School and began tutoring students and children. I have previously tutored individuals from ages 5 to 25 in subjects ranging from basic reading and math, SAT and AP preparation, organization and public speaking, and ESL. I have worked with students for periods ranging from 2 months to 3 years, helping them achieve significant grade and score increases in English, math, history, and standardized testing. I scored in the top 99th percentile in all standardized SAT and AP testing I pursued, and have extensive experience in test-prep and college application tutoring. My work qualified me for acceptance into the Stanford, Harvard, and Oxford University; previous students of mine now attend Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, UPenn's Huntsman Program, and other top high schools and colleges. I have had work experience in government, law, media, non-government organizations, research, and film, am a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, an accomplished horse back rider/competitor, and an established writer for Stanford's daily newspaper.
I have played chess since kindergarten; with my team I won several tournaments including the All Girl's Championships in 2008. I taught chess to students grades K-5 at the Spence School's afte-school chess program from 2007-2011, helping train approximately 30 beginners for 3 hours weekly throughout the school year under the principal teachers Sofia R. and Michael K. Students of mine have competed successfully in tournaments and championships for lower and middle school students under my tutelage.
I got into every college I applied to (Stanford, Harvard, and Oxford), each of which required several excellent essays, admission tests, one or more in person interviews. I wrote each of my essays and did much of my test prep myself, but I also worked closely with admissions professionals and test prep professionals, whose experiences and teaching I can proficiently pass along to students. I am an excellent writer and editor, and write for Stanford's newspaper.
I have extensive tutoring experience working with students grade K-12. Elementary school students I have worked with have seen major improvements in reading comprehension and enjoyment, writing fluency and technique, organization, and general success in class. I have worked individually with 4 different elementary school students for 1 year+ each, with follow up sessions showing continued growth and improvement sustained from our work. I also worked with 20 Kindergarten-4th grade students at a time as an assistant chess teacher at the prestigious Spence School in New York.
In addition, I have worked individually with several students aged 6-15 on organization, test preparation skills, traditional and alternative study styles, and creative learning approaches, for lengths of time ranging from 2 months to 3 years. My own writing ability and proficiency across the board throughout grade school brought me consistent success throughout high school and have helped me achieve top grades at Stanford.
I have pursued training in Tae Kwon Do since I was 11 years old, training under Geraldine M. and Richard C. I was awarded my degree black belt in 2008, and have practiced since then at regular intervals though I have not sought higher rankings.
I am an excellent writer and a grammar perfectionist, so this portion of the test is aptly suited to my strengths. However, it required considerable preparation to understand the tricks of the test and the peculiarities to expect in the questions; I achieved an 800 on my SAT Writing component the first time I took the test as much as a result of my test-prep techniques as of my innate abilities. I have tutored 3+ students in their sophomore and junior years of high school, focusing on SSAT, SAT, and college application preparation, with great success. One now attends Georgetown's School or Foreign Service, another matriculated at Stanford and another at UPenn. I can help students with a clear set of guidelines and techniques, a range of interactive activities, practice questions, administered tests, essay help, etc.
