Hi there! My name is Meryl and I am a recent graduate (2013) from Pomona College, a small and highly selective liberal arts college. I have over 4 years' experience in tutoring, and a long background of thinking critically about education, as both of my parents are elementary school teachers.
In high school, I was often frustrated by the teaching methods used, and I witnessed many of my peers being left behind due to a lack of support and an emphasis on self-reliance. Many teachers let the textbook do the teaching and focused on memorizing techniques over fully understanding how the techniques worked or why they might be useful. I know that learning isn't always easy or fun, but I do my best to find ways to make it interesting for my students--whether it's emphasizing the elements they are most excited by or trying to make the lesson at hand a game.
I worked for three years at my college writing center as a peer tutor and my senior year as a head writing fellow who mentored my fellow tutors. In the writing center I worked with students in a breadth of subjects, including philosophy papers, chemistry lab reports, and personal statements. Our mission at the writing center was to not only help students with the paper they brought in, but make them better and more confident writers, equipped to tackle their next paper. Many students enter college ill-prepared for college level writing and I believe that writing and critical thinking needs to be emphasized much sooner in education. Writing can be scary and very personal--and it's my hope that my students feel more confident and prepared after they work with me.
I can tutor all levels of English, math up to the precalculus level, and am happy to work with students in a variety of other subjects should they need additional help. I enjoy working with all ages, but have the most experience with high school and college age students.
As a tutor, I tailor my teaching to each individual student's needs and interests, and I have a knack for stimulating critical thinking and engagement. It is always my goal to leave a tutoring session with a student excited and ready to tackle the next phase of their work. I hope we'll be able to work together!
I have used illustrator for 4 years and have taken a variety of classes that teach it or use it heavily, including several graphic design technique classes and an Intermediate level Illustrator class. I have continued to use it in my personal and professional work and know the ins and outs of the program with an emphasis in vector drawing. I can assist with graphic design skills if needed and can help people understand the layout of the program so they can become more self-sufficient and able to experiment freely.
I am a native English speaker. I have three years of experience as a college writing tutor and have worked extensively with ESL students on their writing including grammar, word choice, and clarity of ideas. I also received As in all my high school English classes.
I spent three years tutoring writing at the college level. I worked with individuals on their papers in all subjects, and my goal was always to stimulate critical thinking rather than be a simple copy editor. I made sure students left every session with more confidence and prepared to tackle future papers as well as the one they brought in to work on.
