From 2006-08, I completed a Master of Education program, along with obtaining certification to teach Elementary Education. During this time I student taught in 2nd & 4th grade classrooms. Upon completion, I substitute taught pre-k thru 6th grade until I was offered a full-time position teaching 2nd grade.
In terms of my teaching methods, I value interaction. My role as a educator is to facilitate & provide positive reinforcement versus dictate & critique.
While earning my certification to teach elementary education, I developed a deep understanding for teaching and modeling basic math concepts. This has been very effective in working with my younger learners (show don't tell)!
Science is another subject I enjoy teaching due to its “show don't tell” nature. I continuously encourage my students to bring the problems on a page to life! Cooperative and demonstrative learning works best in the classroom; however, as a tutor, drawings, models & various internet resources have proven to be just as effective.
From structured elementary classroom curricula to the five courses college I was in charge of planning, teaching & assessing in China, I have a great deal of experience in this area. To me, English encompasses the four components of literacy (reading, writing, listening & speaking). As a tutor, I am here to assist students as they feel necessary and this provides more freedom to work closely on any one of these areas.
In teaching elementary school, I have had the opportunity of teaching diverse groups of learners, including Burmese refugees and a 2nd grader from the Marshall Islands.
Their dedication and excitement for learning led me to pursue to a career teaching English abroad. Upon earning TEFL certification, I taught English to college students in Nanjing, China.
I am currently enrolled in a TESOL program at Berkeley, which will officially certify me to teach English at public institutes here in the US.
While obtaining my Master's degree, phonics was the main focus of various reading courses. During my student teaching I was evaluated on my ability to plan implement & assess students in this area. In teaching 2nd grade, I had the opportunity to utilize and strengthen my phonetic teaching skills.
Then, in preparing to teach English in China, I participated in an online TEFL course, which had a phonics component. Here, I was able to practice creating, assessing and evaluating lessons before putting these skills to the test in Nanjing.
My passion for education comes from my desire to learn. Although I am a certified teacher, I will always be a student at heart. In tutoring a client in this area, I will utilize the skills I've learned in training, while also sharing personal tips.
I have taught writing in the US and abroad. As a tutor, it is my job to assist students with any work they bring me; however, I have found it very beneficial to allow time for creativity. In fact, I did this with a student I tutored last summer. He was so proud of his own writing that it became the best way to teach/review vocabulary, spelling & grammar. As an educator, I have seen that true learning takes place when students' work is meaningful. Tutoring provides this opportunity & freedom the classroom sometimes cannot.
