All of Julien’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Julien’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

ACT English

Standardized tests are not a good measure of how smart you are, but they are used to judge your qualifications. I have learned to do well in them and can help teach strategies for taking the tests.

ACT Reading

Having learned some of the tricks of the trade, I hope to help you figure out strategies for answering the questions on this test.

American History

I was a Politics major in college, am an avid reader of newspapers and books by historians. I also have written a number of historical articles and given talks on historical topics. I have a passion for the subject matter and love to teach it.

Career Development

I worked as a career counselor for several years, administering the Job Training and Partnership Act (JTPA) as a Case Manager for DePaul University between 1999 and 2000, and its successor, the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) between 2003 and 2005 for Dynamic Educational Systems, Inc. Through my work, I referred more than 100 people to vocational training programs and helped guide them towards a career path that was right for them. I also taught career exploration workshops and helped clients develop resumes.

College Counseling

Having relatively recently gone through the graduate school application process, I remember well what it is like to research and apply for colleges. I would also bring my counseling skills to bear on this subject, having worked for more than four years as a career counselor.

Criminal Justice

Between 2006 and 2009, I worked as office manager and Administrative Coordinator for the Campaign to End the Death Penalty. I worked directly with prisoners and their families and gained insight into not only the functioning of the legal system, but the ways in which it affects ordinary people.

English

I have taught English grammar and composition professionally, serving as an Adjunct Instructor for DePaul University's Career Colleges of Chicago between 2002 and 2003. I am a patient tutor, and would love to help students master the material.

European History

I have a passion for history and social studies. I was a Politics major in college and regularly read newspapers, as well as books about history and politics. I have given a number of public lectures about political and historical topics.

French

My mother is French, and her entire side of the family lives in and around Paris. I grew up speaking French in the household, and have come to learn to write the language as well. In addition to helping students with French exercises, I can help them get comfortable with casual conversation.

GED

I know how stressful tests can be. Through various strategies, I have learned to do well on them. I would like to help students overcome their anxieties and conquer not only the subject matter, but how to take the test.

Government & Politics

I was a Politics major in college. Since then, I have taken a keen interest in political affairs and have been active in advocating for policy changes around a variety of issues. Professionally, I worked for the Campaign to End the Death Penalty between 2006 and 2009. I also have given public speeches about a variety of political and historical topics.

Grammar

My past experience teaching grammar and composition includes work as an Adjunct Instructor with Career Colleges of Chicago, where I taught adult learners. I have always had an attention to detail when it comes to writing, and I hope to help impart that to others, as I have done in the past.

Literature

Growing up, English was my favorite subject, and I had two great high school English teachers who restored my faith in education. I'd love to help bring great literature to life for others.

Microsoft Word

Since 2009, I have been a volunteer in libraries, teaching beginners basic computer skills. This has taught me to break down the act of using computers into basic components, so as to demystify how it's done. I am very patient and calm, and have been told that this creates a reassuring atmosphere for students who may be afraid of computers.

Public Speaking

As a volunteer and professional activist and community organizer, I have conducted public speaking on a variety of political and historical topics. Part of the job of any good organizer is to train new leadership. This means helping those new to public speaking to think through what to say, and overcome their fears of speaking in public. I look forward to working with you too!

Reading

As someone who has taught basic English grammar and composition to adults, I have a passion for reading and writing. I love helping students draw out meaning from whatever they are reading. By patiently helping students identify the main ideas in a passage, I work to help them succeed in school, at work or in life.

SAT Reading

Standardized tests are not the best measure of intelligence, but they can sometimes determine your future. Nevertheless, there are skills to taking them. I can help you practice identifying clues that will allow you to answer most test questions. I look forward to working with you.

Social Studies

I am interested in history, politics and current events. In college, I was a Politics major. I avidly read the newspaper, as well as books about history and politics. I have given talks about a number of political and historical topics. I look forward to helping others make sense of the world around them.

Spanish

In college, I was a Spanish minor and studied in Spain for five months. Since then, I have continued to use my Spanish in professional and social situations. I grew up in a bi-national English/French household. Because Spanish, like French, is a romance language, it has always come naturally to me. Nevertheless, because it is not my native tongue, I have had to learn it systematically and can appreciate the struggles of those learning it as a second language.

Vocabulary

As part of my professional background, I taught English grammar and composition to adult learners. Part of becoming a fluent reader and writer is expanding vocabulary. I am interested in helping people find strategies to do this. Please get in touch if you're interested!

World History

I have a passion for history and social studies. I was a Politics major in college and regularly read newspapers, as well as books about history and politics. I have given a number of public lectures about political and historical topics.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
