Hello!

I am a life-long learner. I love learning new things and I love helping others learn as well. Regardless of the subject matter, my primary concern is helping the student understand why a specific answer is what it is, as well as what the answer is. I have a diverse background; my previous jobs include: CPA, financial analyst, stock broker, University administrator, executive director of a non-profit, and chaplain. I am currently finishing my PhD in theology and spend much of my time researching and writing.

As a mother of four (now grown) children, I understand the frustrations parents encounter when their child is struggling in school as well as the frustrations students encounter in the classroom. As a tutor, I try to understand and address the concerns of students as well as parents. As a student myself, I understand the challenges of meeting requirements of multiple courses simultaneously (Doesn't the teacher realize I have other classes?)!

I have worked with students from junior high school through graduate school. I particularly enjoy working with international students and have an excellent understanding of how English grammar differs from that of other languages.

I look forward to working with you!

Martha

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I am a former CPA with over 20 years experience in accounting and tax as a sole practitioner. My clients were predominately small business owners in the following industries: construction, manufacturing, professional practices (medical, legal, design, and other services), retail, and oil & gas.

In addition to the technical skills, I am able to explain financial statements, tax returns, and the processes involved in creating them to business owners. This means I can help clear up those areas you are having difficulty with.

Bible Studies

I have a Master's of Divinity from Southern Methodist University with an emphasis in Historical Theology. In addition, I am working on my dissertation for my PhD from the Graduate Theological Union. A significant portion of my work is grounded in biblical studies and I am a member of the Society of Biblical Literature.

Reading

I view reading as not only an essential skill, but also as an entry into new, unimaginable worlds and experiences. I have extensive experience working with students to improve reading comprehension as well speed and enjoyment.

Religion

I have a Master's of Divinity from Southern Methodist University with an emphasis in Historical Theology. In addition, I am working on my dissertation for my PhD from the Graduate Theological Union. While my area of expertise is Christianity, I have taken coursework and am knowledgeable about all major religions (Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism as well as the increasingly common category of "spiritual, not religious." In addition, I am a member of the American Academy of Religion.

Writing

I have written numerous papers for a variety of audiences, ranging from newspaper and popular magazines to specialized technical publications. I have extensive experience tutoring students in writing, particularly working with those whose first language is not English. I tailor my approach based on the student's age, grade level, English fluency, grammar and reading skills, as well as his or her ability to organize the paper.
