Future guitar goddesses and gods!
I have been playing and performing guitar since I was 10 ...many moons ago. I've been teaching guitar for 12 years ...successfully seeing beginners get off and running ...playing songs and learning many techniques,
as well as expanding the horizons of intermediate to advanced players.

I will teach you to finger pick, flat pick, play scales and solos; strum in many different patterns; rhythm and beats; learn basic theory (how music works) if you desire.. play chords and melodies; train your main musical asset - your ears.. and take you on your own musical journey with the coolest instrument ever made!

Even after playing all these years, I'm still learning myself, and I love to pass on what I know to others. Along with knowing my stuff.. I'm really really patient, so you can relax and learn at your pace!

It's hard to find one instrument that can do so much and still be easy to carry around!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

Ear training is the method by which a student learns to identify particular notes in a given musical key. To test their ear, they are given 2 musical tones to identify; one which is the root note of a particular key, and the other, which is one of the remaining tones in the chromatic scale.

Before the student is proficient in identifying tones, he or she must learn and utilize scales, including all the notes in the chromatic scale as well as the major scale, natural minor scale and many other sub scales or modal scales.

Students must also learn and practice chords (harmony) which further trains their ears to discern individual tones found within the chords.

General Music

In teaching guitar as an instrument, I also incorporate basic music theory as well as the reading and writing of notation and the reading and writing of tablature for guitar.

Rhythm training is an essential part of my music class. Students learn what measures are, time signatures, rhythmic notation and how it is used within measures. I feel students do better at strumming and picking guitar notes when they have a good understanding of basic rhythm fundamentals.

I teach the chromatic scale which includes all 12 semitones.
I then teach the diatonic major scale and natural minor scale.
Students will learn the scale degree numbers associated with each tone of these scales.
These numbers are essential for ear training, learning about keys and key transposition.

They are also essential to teach the harmonized scale which is the foundation of all key families of chords. This is also very important for musical composition and analysis of composed music.

Students will learn chord theory, which shows the elements of a chord. They first learn about triads and then extended chords and seventh chords. As they progress in their knowledge, I teach them altered chords, including diminished, half diminished, augmented, chords with flatted or sharped 5th, 9th, 13th and the like.

As students learn more chords and playing techniques, I show them how to read and write song charts and all of the symbols used in them such as, repeat signs, bar lines, endings, sections, fermata, coda, and form arrangement.

I feel that rhythm, melody and harmony education is something that every student should learn as they learn their particular instrument.

Guitar

I have been teaching guitar privately in my studio or home since 2003.

I have been playing guitar for 45 years. I have been performing professionally for 28 years.

As a guitar teacher, I emphasize the fundamentals; i.e. rhythm training, strumming, finger picking, flat picking, scales, chords, ear training, lead playing, proper hand and finger positioning, basic music theory including the basic elements of music..rhythm, melody and harmony, reading and writing tablature and notation if desired, teaching how keys are constructed and learning about scale & chord theory.

My students learn all these fundamentals as they learn to play songs using chord charts.
I teach at the pace suited for each student and although I use songs that I suggest to them for each phase of their lessons, I also am open to a song chosen by them if it's within their reach at the time. This makes learning more fun for them and keeps them more motivated.

Music Theory

I can teach you the basics of music theory which applies to every musical instrument you can imagine!

Rhythm training is an essential part of my music class. Students learn what measures are, time signatures, rhythmic notation and how it is used within measures. I feel students do better at playing their instrument when they have a good understanding of basic rhythm fundamentals.

The basis of Melody and improvisation is the chromatic scale, the musical alphabet, which includes all 12 semitones in the Western system of music.

I then teach the 7 tone major scale and natural minor scale. From there you learn about modes derived from these major and minor scales.

You'll learn the scale degree numbers associated with each tone of these scales.

These numbers are essential for ear training, learning about keys and key transposition.

They are also essential to teach the harmonized scale which is the foundation of all key families of chords.

This is the basis of Harmony and is very important for musical composition and analysis of composed music.

You will learn chord theory, which shows the elements of a chord. This includes learning about triads and seventh chords. As you progress in your knowledge, I teach you altered chords, including diminished, half diminished, augmented.. and chords with flatted or sharped 5th, 9th, 13th and the like.
