My strategy is to find a student's learning edge and then to engage him or her along that edge. I strongly believe that whatever the subject or task a personal voice is essential to learning, so I encourage participation in as full a sense as possible. Then, I work with a student to organize their voice in ways that communicate effectively.

I aim for: knowledge, experience, and skill within specific subject areas; skill in applying one's learning across disciplines; and respect and curiosity for one's own learning edge and experience.

For nearly ten years, I have been teaching across the elementary and middle school curriculum -- especially in English, Math, History and Social Studies, and Science. I have also taught high school students including in a residential school/group home. I am also an actor and have worked as an acting and voice coach in Shakespeare programs, both with adults in a professional Shakespeare conservatory and with elementary age children in a summer camp.

I earned a B.A in Humanities from Colgate University, designing my own program in philosophy, literature, and religion. This included writing and defending a thesis for cross-disciplinary work.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am a substitute teacher and actor with training in both contemporary and classical theater, as well as in improvisation. I have worked in theater and public speaking with both children and adults, professional actors and amateurs. One of my particular skills is working with Shakespeare, and the clarity and power of his rhetoric serve as a model for my work with speaking and writing. I have trained as an actor at A.C.T. and the National Theater Institute, and as an actor and teacher with Shakespeare and Company. I am currently training in Linklater-based voice work.
