My name is Sam, and I am 25 years old. I graduated college with degrees in both Finance and Spanish. I have spent several months living abroad in Peru, Spain and Mexico. I have extensive experience with Math, both tutoring and in competition. I finished Calculus by my freshman year of high school and placed 10th in the Wisconsin State Mathcounts competition. I also have high levels of experience with standardized tests, and I scored a 36 composite on my ACT, a 1480 on my standard (Math+Verbal) SAT, and in the 94th percentile on the GRE exam.
I have spent 5 years working with children ages 4-11 through multiple organizations and another year with middle schoolers age 12-14. I was also a Resident Assistant in the dormitories both my junior and senior years of college and worked with all different students, including many freshmen and international exchange students from around the world. I am very willing to provide references for this experience upon request.
I am a very healthy and active individual, and I have always maintained myself as a role model for adolescents and young adults. I have never partaken of drugs or tobacco and try to help younger students find healthy alternatives to such things. I always speak properly and respectfully and treat others the way I would like to be treated. I live a clean and responsible lifestyle following the morals I was raised with.

I achieved a 36 on the reading section of the ACT and a 34 on the English Language use section after taking 3 Honors level English courses in high school. I also passed the English Writing and Composition Advanced Placement test which earned me credit for the 100 level English class at the University. I took a further 3 writing-based English classes at the University en route to graduation. I find the ACT English to be made up in most part of basic grammar components which must be practiced and understood in all forms.
I achieved a 36 in the Math section of the ACT after completing my first Calculus class as a freshman in high school. I then passed the Calculus and Statistics Advanced Placement tests before continuing into business math and mathematical logic in college. ACT math can be easily passed for any high school student proficient at math who knows the right problems to practice, which I do from experience.
I achieved a 36 on the ACT reading section after being an advanced reader throughout my public schooling. I studied Contemporary Literature of the United States, English Literature and Shakespearean Literature. I also studied different styles of utopian literature for my Political Science 356 class. The Reading section of the ACT requires attention to detail and certain strategies for connecting the questions back to the passages.
I achieved a 36 on the Science portion of the ACT exam after classes in Advanced Biology, Advanced chemistry, Biotechnology, and Math Physics in high school. I then went on to study Animal Biology in college. The Science section of the ACT can be a bit tricky, but I have the resources and previous experience to help show a student which areas of science they should study as well as the methods to practice and ultimately achieve success.
I took an Algebra 1 course in middle school while I was on the Wisconsin State Champion Mathcounts team. I then proceeded to take Algebra 2 and Algebra 3 along with Trigonometry through the rest of middle school. Algebra 1 is a large step forward from basic math into the world of advanced mathematics. I remember when I occasionally needed help with the course and would love to help other students to make this transition.
I took Algebra 2 in middle school (a few years ahead of schedule). In high school and college I then volunteered my time tutoring other students in Algebra 2. Algebra 2 involves the application of theories that I use every day in life and used frequently in my classes as a business major. These are concepts which I have grown comfortable with through years of practice.
I took two courses on American History in high school and then the American Government class. I passed the Human Geography Advanced Placement test and then took another American History course as well as 2 political science courses in American foreign affairs while attending college. American History has always been something of a passion for me, from understanding the implications outlined in the Articles of Confederacy to the various American wars and the modern political environment.
I played baseball for several years when I was young and learned the basic rules. I later coached and taught children ages 7-12 in summer baseball for three years. During the last few years I became an avid fan and grew more involved in the statistics, strategies, and more complex issues involved in the game. I now run frequent baseball simulations monitoring the player's progress and predicting the outcome of games. I am also well versed in baseball strategies and terminologies which are used during the game.
I took 3 Honors English courses in high school, passing the Advanced Placement test for the English 110 course at my University. I then took 3 more writing based courses at the University en route to graduation. I have been a native English speaker all of my life and recently scored in the 94th percentile of the GRE verbal section, which incorporated in depth testing of vocabulary skills. I practice proper speech and grammar in all aspects of my life, including sending text messages and instant messaging.
After spending many years learning Spanish myself, I began working with students who were not native English speakers and helped them to learn English. I understand learning or perfecting a new language can be difficult and take the process at whatever pace is appropriate for the student.
I began European History as required courses throughout my public schooling. In high school I elected to take a Western Civilizations class focusing on the ancient Roman civilization. In college I took a course specifically on Spanish history and later I studied abroad in Spain and took a course there about Spanish cultural history which was taught entirely in Spanish. I have also taken courses on the architectural history of Europe as well as the 18th and 19th century political climate leading up to World Wars one and two.
I began studying Geography as an independent passion in middle school, were I reached the final round of three separate Geography Bees. I then took a course on Geography in high school and passed the Advanced Placement test in Human Geography, giving me credit for a college course in the subject. I then took another college course in Geography, focusing on southeast Asia and Africa.
I took a course called Information Systems in college which was a requirement for all business majors. This course spent an entire semester teaching advanced uses of Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel. In Access we created a new database for every assignment, often incorporating several new techniques to complete the goal.
I have used Microsoft Windows computers sine I was 10 years old (the last 12 years). I understand all of the basic functions as well as some of the more advanced functions which can be performed on a Windows computer. I have taken several courses on the usage of Microsoft Windows, most recently an Information Systems course in college. I would be glad to help other people understand proficient use of Microsoft Windows computers.
In high school I took 3 years of Theater, during which I was required to memorize 4 different monologues as well as one partner scene which were viewed and critiqued by dozens of my peers. I then wrote a 25 page paper on the speaking and acting which my partner and I had performed. I also took a communications and speech course in high school during which we discussed the natural human aversion to public speaking as well as techniques for conquering this. We also worked to improve the clarity and emotion with which we communicated our points while giving a series of 5 speeches to the class of 30 students. I was able to put this into practice when I was unexpectedly requested on two different occasions to speak before the board of the UW-L Foundation, the multimillion dollar organization responsible for fundraising scholarships for my university.
I grew up in a Catholic setting and learned Christian-based religion through religious education classes all through my youth. As a teenager, I began to question religion and spoke in-depth with several close friends who were Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist. I followed this up with two religious studies courses in college and learned more about the ancient beginnings of religious worship among the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians. I also discussed the place of religion in society in my political science classes. Recently I spent time on a spiritual retreat in the mountains where I discussed spirituality with a Vietnamese Buddhist monk and participated in a traditional Cherokee sweat lodge put on by a Cherokee elder. Religion can mean different things to countless people, yet I have a thorough grounding in some of the more influential religions of history.
After spending time on math team in high school and scoring highly on the original SAT, I begin helping other students prepare for their own standardized tests. I have helped several students prepare for both the SAT and the SSAT, working one on one to help them work through problems and then having them work on their own so that I can review the work they do by themselves.
I played soccer at a recreational level for seven years while growing up. I then transitioned to a competitive "classic" level team for which tryouts were required. I played on three different competitive teams at this level, where our team paid extra to bring in specialized coaches from Europe, eventually winning our league. I played soccer on a few different international trips which I took, learning different techniques. I was also present in Spain while they made their amazing run to win the 2010 world cup and had learned all of the terminologies and politics of the European football leagues from a few passionate Spaniards.
I played 6 years of tennis as I was growing up and became a coach and scorekeeper for elementary and middle school children when I was in college. I taught a summer camp on tennis for three years in a row and learned how best to communicate the scoring and techniques to children. Lessons including basic forehand and backhand strokes, serving, volleying and lobbing, as well as strategies for positioning yourself for returning the opponent's serves and shots during the game.
I ran 4 years of Track and Field in high school and competed in sprint, long distance, and jumping field events. Following high school I helped to coach younger students who were in the program at my school and then for two years I ran a week long track and field camp for elementary school children. From my high school coach, who has 35 years of coaching experience, I learned techniques not only for racing and competing but also for training and building our body to peak at your most critical meets.
Really connected with my teenager! — Sam came to help my very reluctant teenager with Spanish. I was a bit nervous because my son hadn't totally bought into using a tutor to help.
