Hi, my name is Caius,

I graduated from UC Berkeley four ago and have been working as a math tutor in the SF Bay, Boulder, CO & Eugene. OR since. Currently I am back in Berkeley! I offer instruction in all Calculus courses (I-III) to both college and high school students.

A little about me: I've loved math since I was a very young kid, taught and inspired by my mom. I participated in Math Olympiads on the national level in Romania, where I grew up. In high school, by which time I was already living in California, I scored a perfect math SAT score, 5's on both AP Calculus tests, and received an award as math student of the year from my Calculus teacher. During college, I studied conservation and natural history with an emphasis in mathematics, and my math coursework included: Multi-variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Mathematical Logic, Differential Equations.

A review from previous student:

"Caius really stepped in for me when I was struggling with a new calculus teacher who had no idea what the course content was herself. He helped explain concepts to me that I had repetitively struggled with before looking for help and is a very patient and extremely intelligent tutor. I was a senior at Berkeley High taking AP Calc last year, and with the help of Caius, I'm now at UC Santa Cruz and have a very strong calculus base. Along with some college credit from the AP course. I highly recommend him as a tutor."

- Sami, student at Berkeley High School

Caius helped me to prep for my calculus final, and was very helpful with explanations, managing our time, and working at my speed. I don't think I would have done nearly as well on the final without Caius' help.

Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

This class really has two parts: 1) learning more algebra skills and 2) trigonometry, which is the study of some mathematical functions that are formed by looking at the way certain measurements change as a point moves around a circle. It turns out these functions are actually a description of many things we observe in Nature in the form of waves: waves in the ocean, sound waves, light (yes, it turns out light can be described as waves kind of like sound except the waves travel much faster!).

I find teaching this class to be fun because students can get excited about the easy connections they can make with things in the real world described by the mathematical ideas.

I find Calculus to be the most interesting and fun subject for me to teach; I have extensive experience with Calculus I-III (single variable, multivariable, vector calculus, etc.)

"[Caius's] patience and understanding helps you retain information and do well on your exams. After struggling with my class I started meeting with Caius regularly. Once he explained it to me my grade and my understanding of math improved. I couldn't have succeeded without him!"

---Isaac, Berkeley City College (now at University of California, Santa Barbara)

Geometry as we learn it in high school is still surprisingly similar to the way it looked when it was developed by Euclid in ancient times! This is one of the most useful branches of mathematics in everyday life to anyone who likes to work on projects like woodworking, making things at home, etc. And it's all very visual so it doesn't involve too many scary equations.

Hi,

If you are interested in working with me on understanding the fundamentals of object-oriented computer programming and computer science in the context of learning Java, let me know! I am quite proficient with the key concepts of Java, fairly knowledgeable about .swing and other commonly used libraries, and have delved a little bit into using Java3D for graphics rendering.

My experience is ideally suited to teaching high school students who are taking 1st or 2nd AP computer science, or those relatively new or inexperienced who'd like to learn more.

In college I took two classes on linear algebra, which turned out to be one of my favorite topics in mathematics. I have tutored students in this subject before, in the type of class for which linear algebra is paired up with differential equations, as well as in pure linear algebra introductory courses intended for math majors. Let me know if all those vector and matrix operations are starting to crash down over your head, I'd be happy to help you sort it out.

This is usually a high school course named either precalculus or math analysis (the 2nd is a misnomer). If you need help with this let me know, I have tutored quite a few high school students and college students during the last three years. The challenge of this course lies in the fact that it covers many topics that aren't quite as closely related as those in trigonometry or geometry for instance. Teachers kind of throw in a whole bunch of things that need to get covered before taking calculus, and it all may seem slightly disconnected at times.

I grew up in Romania and lived there until I was a teenager. I still speak Romanian with my family, and occasionally read in Romanian, and so have retained my fluency. My conversational Romanian and reading Romanian are my strong suits, while writing is somewhat of a weakness that I haven't practiced with much in recent years. The advantage of having me as a tutor is that I am also fluent in English, as it has been my primary language for the last 15 years. Let me know if you are one of those (very) rare people taking up the journey of learning Romanian! I'd be happy to help and my rates are negotiable.
