I have worked as a private tutor for high school students preparing for college. In addition to helping students understand class material (mainly English and math), I also teach students organization and study skills in fun, creative ways. I have found that many students are able to learn their class material much more efficiently when they have a fundamental understanding of human cognition. Often their classes are too big or not set up in a way that suits their individual needs, so as a tutor I work with them to communicate with their teachers and set up their own environment that helps them learn most effectively.
I also have classroom and tutoring experience with elementary and middle school students, from camps, working in a kindergarten classroom, and volunteering as a “homework helper” at a local library. Additionally, I worked as an Instructional Assistant for an Introductory Psychology course offered at my university, where I facilitated students’ understanding of the course material and offered one-on-one tutoring for students who needed help developing their essay-writing skills and reducing their test anxiety. I have experience working with children of all ages and young adults, including those with learning disabilities such as ADHD. I also have lab experience in topics relating to learning, memory, and cognition and this background has helped me become a better tutor. Using research-supported behavior modification and memory retention techniques, I help students develop a set of tools that can be used across a variety of subjects. I believe that creating competent and autonomous students begins with fostering an intrinsic love of learning and an understanding of the science of learning to address one's own goals, challenges, and strengths.
Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for tutoring for you or your child. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing if we would work well together! We can meet at a local library, school, or cafe or I can come to your home.
I have ten years of experience babysitting a variety of children ages 0-12, so I am familiar with the needs of children this age. I have also taken multiple developmental psychology classes to help me understand important developmental milestones. Additionally, I have experience tutoring K-6 students at a local library, where I volunteered for over a year. I have also worked at a young writer's camp, teaching elementary children how to tap into their creativity and write poems, short stories, memoirs, etc. Additionally, I spent a semester working in a kindergarten and sixth grade classroom, where my duties included preparing the classroom environment, assignments and homework packets, administering one-on-one student assessments, and keeping students on task.
I have worked as an English tutor for students of all ages, assisting them in understanding their reading assignments and refining their writing skills. I help students break down their assignments in ways that are easier for them to understand, while also building foundational skills that can be used across multiple subjects. As your tutor, we would go over your specific challenges and address them in a way that works well for you.
I have played piano for over 10 years and enjoy a variety of styles including classical, jazz, and pop music. I have 2 years of experience teaching beginning students of all ages. I teach students basic piano technique, composition/improvisation, and the fundamentals of music theory. I encourage students to bring in songs they would like to learn to play and experiment with creating their own melodies. I try to make the lessons a fun experience and place for creative expression while also emphasizing the importance of learning the language of musical notation.
In addition to my experience tutoring students, I also have worked in a lab that studied learning and memory, where I became familiar with the science of learning which I incorporate into my teaching.
I have experience tutoring academic, empirical, and creative writing at all levels (K-12 and college). As a teacher's assistant for Psychology 101, I helped students develop ideas for a final class essay. I have also helped students get into college by working with them on their college admissions essays (i.e. personal statements).
As your tutor, we would go over your specific challenges and address them in a way that works well for you. Usually, I help students brainstorm, free-write, create a detailed outline, and write a draft. At a later meeting, I help students revise, edit, and refine their work. Your grades will reflect your effort but you will also develop skills that you can use for the future - my goal is for you to become a competent, autonomous writer.
