Teaching and learning new ideas and skills is my greatest passion. Having graduated from college, I know that an excellent education is the surest way to a better life. As a former 5th grade teacher, I have helped many students make huge gains in their reading comprehension and conceptual understanding of math. I take pride in helping kids achieve their goals and improve their confidence.

I specialize in tutoring math and reading for success in the classroom and on Common Core aligned exams. Whether we are working on phonics or algebra, I aim for kids to be challenged, but also comfortable during the lesson. We take diagnostics and set goals at the beginning of each semester, and I provide regular progress reports to monitor growth.

I have experience in reading intervention and teaching English as a second language, primarily with Spanish-speaking students. If your son or daughter has and IEP (Individual Education Plan) through their school, I can align my lessons to meet those goals.

To ensure students have a quiet place to study and work, I hold most sessions at local libraries. However, I’m happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student or parent.
I’m looking forward to helping your child reach their potential!

Computer Programming

While teaching 5th grade, I taught students the fundamentals of programming with the popular JavaScript language and ProcessingJS library. Students would write their own programs and share them, explore programs made by others, and learn from each other's programs. Using the kid-friendly platform on Khan Academy (a website with an interactive platform to practice the basics of coding) my student's developed a familiarity with coding and had fun in the process.

Criminal Justice

I have a BS in Criminal Justice from San Diego State University.

Elementary (K-6th)

From 2012-2014, I taught 5th grade at J.E. Manch Elementary School in Las Vegas, NV. I created and executed curriculum in all content areas. As a Teach For America corp member and graduate student at UNLV, I received extensive training in literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and ESL/ELL instructional methods. Further, at my school site I completed professional development in the following areas: Intervention for Struggling Readers, Reading Academy, and Kagan Classroom strategies. Through my experiences, I believe in mastery-based, self-paced instruction that challenges students to think critically and creatively on their work.

Phonics

While a teaching at J.E. Manch Elementary school, I completed professional development in the "Intervention for Struggling Readers" program. The course focused on assessment, intervention, and instruction using Core Phonics. As many of my students were ELL (80%), I have extensive experience and success teaching kids how to read using phonemic strategies.

Great tutor Jeff has been great as a tutor for my son going into 6th grade. Jeff helps to relate the subjects to my son's interests (sports, etc), and engages him to take responsibility for his growth not only during the sessions, but between sessions too. The focus on reading/writing and math has been a great balance to keep my son engaged and learning. ...
