I am passionate about teaching and learning mathematics. I've been working in the classroom and with students one-on-one for 14 years. One of the greatest thrills in life is to see the spark of understanding in a student's eyes when a new concept is learned. I've seen this spark while teaching high school students of all levels and abilities. My teaching style is professional, creative, engaging, and caring. Over the years, I have developed the skills to meet the needs of reluctant learners and struggling students as well as students who are striving to perform at the highest level.

Continued math success depends upon sound fundamentals, quality study habits, and good problem solving skills. These are the qualities that I develop in my students. In the classroom, the tools that I employ are drill and practice, challenging puzzles that synthesize previous knowledge, and contextualizations that ground student appreciation in the discipline of mathematics. Students that I work with gain a deeper appreciation for mathematics and learn skills that they can use for a lifetime of exploration in mathematics.

I am available most afternoons and evenings.

Test Preparation:

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been a high school math teacher since 2000. I have taught geometry, algebra, algebra II, pre-calculus, and honors pre-calculus. I have also designed and taught a highly successful math remediation program for our school. D and F level students are required to take this program. Students that successfully pass through this program almost always perform at a satisfactory level for the remainder of their high school careers.

Algebra 2

I have also taught senior students that take a course that we call Advanced Math, which is a Pre-Calculus-lite course without the trigonometry and am adept at supporting students that might not be heading toward math, science, or engineering in post-secondary studies.

Precalculus

I have taught Honors Pre-Calculus and Pre-Calculus for the past 12 years. I have also taught remediation courses during the summer for the past 12 years. Students in the math remediation program vary in course work from Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus and AP Statistics. I have an MEd with an emphasis in Instructional Technology, and I am able to provide guidance in accessing additional internet based resources to supplement one-on-one tutoring. My participation in SDSUs Research Experience for Undergraduates and Teachers in 2007 gave me a particular interest in presenting mathematics in a way that inspires students to pursue post-secondary study in math, science, and engineering.

SAT Math

I have taken two workshops in preparing students for the SAT and ACT exams. I have been a high school math teacher since 2000. I have taught geometry, algebra, algebra II, pre-calculus, and honors pre-calculus.

Trigonometry

I have taught Honors Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry and Intermediate Algebra with Trigonometry for the past 12 years.

Students can use their time in most classes more effectively by becoming better note takers.  The instruction in most math classes is formatted as follows:  1. Ask questions on previous nights homework 2. Teacher introduces a new concepts via lecture 3. Teacher works example problems on the board 4. Students complete a problem set based on the days instruction Students... read more

One of the best things that you can do in advance of a tutoring session (or in advance of going to math class for that matter) is to come prepared with an excellent effort that yielded an incorrect solution.  Tutors, students, and teachers, should be incredibly excited by the opportunity to explore a well intentioned mistake that seems to be based in sound mathematics.  Think about... read more
