I am a certified elementary special education teacher with over 6 years experience, having taught in California, Virginia and the District of Columbia. I have worked with both high school, middle school and elementary students. My work has focused on students with learning disabilities in language arts and mathematics, but I have specialized in teaching methods that apply to all content areas.

I am trained as a Level I teacher of the Wilson Reading Program, an amazing phonics instruction program that teaches students in a systematic manner how to attack unknown words to improve reading fluency, comprehension and writing fluency.

I look forward to working with students who are frustrated with school or learning and need a new approach.

ADD/ADHD

I completed a master's program at the George Washington University in Special Education. I have worked with many students on techniques to improve focus in the classroom and at home. There are many interventions that students can learn and practice independently to drastically improve focus and concentration on learning tasks.

Aspergers

I have worked for 6 years with students on the spectrum identified with both Autism and Aspergers. I have worked in both inclusion and self contained settings at both the high school and elementary level. Recently, I completed an online course through Project Optimal of 180 hours of instruction for my Added Authorization in Autism Spectrum Disorders for my current state of California teaching credential.

Dyslexia

With both my Level I certification for the Wilson Reading Program and my graduate degree in special education, I have a great deal of experience working with students with Dyslexia and how it can impact performance in school (not just reading). Though this can be a very frustrating condition, there are many interventions and 'habits' that can be developed to help students have success with reading. The systematic approach to the Wilson Reading Program has been one of my greatest tools when working with students with Dyslexia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a resource specialist at the elementary level (k-5) and tutored middle school students (6-8). I have worked both in a resource room in small groups as well as inclusion in the general education setting. I have prepared and implemented lessons in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies to varying degrees with students from kindergarten to 5th grade. In California, I am familiar with the new elementary Common Core standards system, and how they will be applied to state assessments.

Guitar

For three years, I provided after school guitar lessons to inner-city high school students in Washington DC. In addition, I gave guitar lessons for elementary aged children at the Sitar Arts Center for two sessions.

Phonics

Through my training in the Wilson Reading Program as well and literacy education as part of my George Washington University masters program, I have extensive knowledge and experience in phonics instruction as part of a dynamic literacy education program.

Special Needs

I have received a Masters in Education at George Washington University in Special Education (k-12) and have worked for 6 years in both secondary and primary education institutions. My focus has been in reading based disabilities and mild/moderate learning disabilities.

Study Skills

As part of my graduate studies, study skills were a substantial focus when discussing transition and self-determination development. It has been a constant element in my overall curriculum at both the secondary and primary level. There are many techniques that I have taught in class that are applicable in the home-tutoring environment.
