I am well versed in the Spanish language, including years of study of both grammar and literature. I started studying Spanish in elementary school, and continued through high school and college. I also studied art and history in Spain at the University of Barcelona for a year.
My study skills knowledge comes from my successful academic experiences learning math, science, writing, and languages, and also from my many years of experience completing engineering projects on the job. I have also taken many courses in education, learning styles, meta-cognition, and basic skills development.
Study skills include learning how to organize materials and resources, practice time management, prioritize tasks, and use text books, references, and calculators appropriately. All of these are very important and basic to learning how to study, how to approach and define assignments, and how to move forward towards a successful learning outcome. When I tutor, I always help my students with their approach to the task, including how to think about and define the steps, the concepts involved, how to break something down into parts, and how to fit the assignment into the larger picture of what they are learning (the context). Fundamental to all of this is the practice of organization. For example, with math it is important to write out math calculations clearly from step to step, and to learn to understand the process of how to approach a problem or task in order to solve and complete it. Many students just need to see and define a road map which will help them get started, and begin to bring some clarity to something that seems very confusing.
Study skills also may include using different approaches to learning something, such as verbal and aural practice, written practice, repetition, memorization aids, etc. I always assess which study skill will best help my student achieve success within a specific situation. I have tutored many different types and levels of students, and I draw from my own experience and success in both academics and project management to identify what the study weakness may be, and work with them on developing their own successful approach to studying and completing assignments.
