Hello, I am a teacher and social worker from Maine that is looking to continue providing education and instruction in the San Diego area. I will be moving out in late August (approximately August 14th), and would like to begin as soon as possible. I have excellent experience that would allow me to help people (from roughly 4th or 5th grade age to adults) hone their skills and produce better work.

I have four years of experience teaching at the collegiate level. I also have done social work at the direct care level, and have spent time with children 6-18 with developmental and behavioral disabilities. My background is in English and communication. I did a double major in English and philosophy at Dalhousie University, one of the premier schools in Eastern Canada. After graduating there, I returned to my hometown and completed a Master's in communication at the University of Maine. There I received perfect marks, and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. During my graduate work, I was put in charge of teaching my own public speaking courses. I was nominated as among the best young instructors in the communication department. I have since taught interpersonal communication at one of the University of Maine System's smaller schools, located nearby. I gave a presentation on my published work for the faculty there recently (a chapter in a collection of work on the show "Mad Men".

As an instructor I have always prided myself on getting the most out of people by first helping them to relax. When it comes to English and all forms of communicating, people often just need to slow things down a bit and go for what is simple and organized before they expand. Good instruction also requires you to "meet a person where they are" so to speak. For me, this means two things. First, understand what someone wants out of their educational experience. Not everyone is looking to ace a class or a test, and it's important to know what a person's real goal is. Secondly, you must find ways to help someone connect their work to their own life. It's easy to run into motivational trouble as a teacher when the pupil cannot connect their work to anything they would do in their normal lives. People have said this countless times about public speaking. I encourage them not to think about an Oscar acceptance speech, but come down to earth and think, might I ever work somewhere where I would need to train a number of new employees? The need to convey ideas and concepts clearly to others orally is far more universal than we tend to think.

To sum things up, I am a driven person that knows how to push people to their best. But I also know how to laugh, and how to make things fun sometimes when it's possible. I look forward to new experiences teaching in California.
