I have tutored all kinds of Math for more than 30 years. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Education from UC Santa Cruz. I taught for 12 years in public and charter schools as a credentialed math teacher. I have taught everything from pre-Algebra to pre-Calculus and IB Math Studies, which includes Probability, Statistics, Logic, and Differentiation with real-life applications. I retired from teaching to pursue other endeavors. Currently, I enjoy tutoring all of the subjects I previously taught, as well as AP Calculus and college level Business Calculus. I have helped struggling students bring a failing grade up to passing. One student, who brought his low F up to a C, said "I wish I would have called you sooner. I learned so much from you, I think I could have had an A or a B if I hadn't waited until I got so far behind."
I help students understand the concepts by explaining them different ways. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will create a visual, a sketch, or a graph whenever possible. This helps students see what is going on in the problem and makes the numbers and symbols more concrete and meaningful. I help students find ways to remember things, develop study skills, and analyze their mistakes. It is important to understand what is going wrong when the final answer is incorrect. Sometimes the new concept is understood, but smaller process errors lead to an incorrect answer, which can be frustrating.
I understand that many students feel anxious and lack confidence about doing math. They need lots of encouragement. I can help them put things into perspective. Math can be challenging, so they need to blame the math, not the brain. Some things in life are harder than others, so a little determination goes a long way. Each learner is different, which is why I enjoy tutoring one-on-one. I can pay attention to each person I work with and focus on making it meaningful for them. Ms. D has advanced my daughter in math beyond what I thought was possible. She has taken a child who believed that she was unable to do math and developed her in to a leader in her math class. My wife and I are deeply grateful.
Ms. D. offered to make up time that had been lost over the last few weeks from no fault of hers, I am very impressed with that gesture.
Debbie was the best math tutor we have had yet for my son, who is a sophomore taking Algebra 2. She was so efficient and was able to quickly pinpoint areas he needed help on. We highly recommend Debbie!!
Debbie is a fantastic tutor, she is focused on all the right areas, preps kids well for tests, and interacts extremely well with kids of all ages. Great tutor!
Debbie stepped into a very challenging situation. Prior to accepting the tutoring job, she reviewed the material and determined whether or not she would be able to provide my son with the necessary tools he required in order to proceed. This was a daunting task, but she did not waiver from the challenge. My son tends to get off-task and his organizational skills are somewhat immature for his age. It was very important to Debbie that my son truly learn the information versus simply memorizing the data for the final. She basically had to go back and teach him the concepts, as he is in an independent HS program. Not only is she teaching him math (statistics), but she is also teaching him how to learn. I find this to be a far more important skill than just learning the math concepts. Teaching my son how to take appropriate notes, how to study, and how to conceptualize information is a skill that he can apply to all subjects.
Debbie is a wonderful Math tutor. She took her time to guide me through complicated formulas and problems. She helped me truly understand and effectively apply the concepts that were being reviewed. She explained difficult and complex issues in an understandable manner and is very comprehensive with the subject matter. Debbie also has great communication skills and using these skills, she has been the perfect tutor for me.
I learn more than I had thought I would. I love how you explain everything to me so I can understand, what I am doing. I'm much more confidence I will get a high score in my test. Thank you very much for being patient with me and very helpful. Take care!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
