I have tutored all kinds of Math for more than 30 years. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Education from UC Santa Cruz. I taught for 12 years in public and charter schools as a credentialed math teacher. I have taught everything from pre-Algebra to pre-Calculus and IB Math Studies, which includes Probability, Statistics, Logic, and Differentiation with real-life applications. I retired from teaching to pursue other endeavors. Currently, I enjoy tutoring all of the subjects I previously taught, as well as AP Calculus and college level Business Calculus. I have helped struggling students bring a failing grade up to passing. One student, who brought his low F up to a C, said "I wish I would have called you sooner. I learned so much from you, I think I could have had an A or a B if I hadn't waited until I got so far behind."
I help students understand the concepts by explaining them different ways. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will create a visual, a sketch, or a graph whenever possible. This helps students see what is going on in the problem and makes the numbers and symbols more concrete and meaningful. I help students find ways to remember things, develop study skills, and analyze their mistakes. It is important to understand what is going wrong when the final answer is incorrect. Sometimes the new concept is understood, but smaller process errors lead to an incorrect answer, which can be frustrating.
I understand that many students feel anxious and lack confidence about doing math. They need lots of encouragement. I can help them put things into perspective. Math can be challenging, so they need to blame the math, not the brain. Some things in life are harder than others, so a little determination goes a long way. Each learner is different, which is why I enjoy tutoring one-on-one. I can pay attention to each person I work with and focus on making it meaningful for them.
