Hello and welcome to my WyzAnt profile, and thank you for your interest! I have the opportunity to provide you with a brief overview of my academic credentials, my successful teaching and tutoring experience.
I am an awesome experienced teacher with 37 years of experience. I graduated from University of Houston located in Houston, Texas, with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. I also graduated from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie, Texas, in Prairie with a masters of education in administration and supervision. In order to provide my diverse students with the best instructional strategies for developing math concepts, I attended many classes and sessions at the University of Texas (Dana Center for Improving Instruction for Math and Science) in Austin, TX, Rice University (RUMPUS Math Summer Program) in Houston, TX, and the University of Houston (MODULE Math Program) in Houston, TX. I have also provided many presentations and staff development to teachers for providing the best instructional strategies for teaching mathematics across the United States.
Working together to achieve the extraordinary is my slogan for student success. With this drive to help students succeed, I provide multiple approaches, with the use of manipulatives, drawings, an interactive math computer program, a unique problem solving strategy and step by step procedure to help improve student success with math problem solving. Students begin to keep organized notes of step by step problem solving procedures for math problem solving with examples of targeted math problems. Soon, my students gain confidence as they grow and progress to achieve success in math during class and on assessments.
I am looking forward to meeting and working with you.
I led Special Education Workshops for teaching Special Education students with ADD/ADHD and students who were 504. These workshops provide: Instructional Strategies that involve hands on and interactive activities with manipulatives for students with ADD/ADHD; Short assignments that involve timed limit thinking before discussion with ADD/ADHD; Interactive activities that involve graphic organizers, demonstrating the solutions, drawing/illustating solutions and oral presentations for students with ADD/ADHD. I worked with ADD/ADHD students in small group and afterschool tutorials building vocabulary for reading and mathematics. These lessons used the Freyer model and foldables and games of matching.
I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree - Major Elementary Education and have Teacher Certification in Elementary Education. I have experience teaching self contained Elementary students grades k-6 for 20 plus years. I have taught reading, math, science, social studies, language arts, spelling for grades 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. I have developed lessons that built concepts from concrete to abstract using manipulative, listening stations, interactive stations, paired learning and small group. I have developed and designed assessments that were open ending and multiple choice to monitor student progress. I have experienced with teaching grade 1 students for 5 years. I taught these students how to read using phonetic lessons and sight word lessons. I developed learning stations so students could work independently on their skills of math, social studies, science, spelling and reading.
Elementary Mathematics includes the following topics:
Basic Math Facts
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers, Fractions and Mixed Numbers and Decimals.
Understanding and Solving Percent
Geometry and Measurement which includes area, perimeter, volume, angles and their measure, polygons and irregular figures
Proportionality which includes similar figures, unit rate, ratio and proportional relationships with constant rate of change.
Graphing and Transformations
Algebraic Reasoning which includes writing and solving equations.
In teaching grade 1 for 5 years, I taught students how to read and write a summary of what they read. Reading was taught to students using phonetic lessons and sight word lessons. Phonetic lessons included teaching students the sound and rules for vowels, consonant blends, and consonants. Also, I designed interactive lessons that were provided for syllables so students would be able to break words apart.
PreAlgebra includes the following:
* Basic Facts
* Problem Solving
* Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers, Fractions and Mixed Numbers, Integers, and Decimals.
*Understanding and Solving Percents
*Algebraic Reasoning which includes writing and solving equations (one, two and multi step equations)and arithmetic sequence with constant rate of change.
*Geometry and Measurements which include conversions, area, perimeter, volume, surface area, polygons and perspectives, Pythagorean Theorem
* Proportionality which includes unit rate, ratio, similar figures and proportional relationships with setting up equations and identifying constant rate of change and non proportional relationships
* Graphing and Transformations which include interpretation of graphs, charts and tables, translations, reflections, rotations and dilations
