Elementary (K-6th)

I have several years of experience as a tutor in elementary reading, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and writing. I also have been a substitute teacher in an International School in Malaysia. When I studied for my Master's degree in Education, I was required to become proficient in assessment skills. Using this training, I work with early learners to determine the best approach in developing reading, writing, and comprehension skills appropriate for my student's age, grade, proficiency level.

I look forward to learning more about your student needs! With a flexible schedule and willingness to meet your student at a convenient place, I hope to hear from you soon!

Painting

I studied with University of Maryland for a Bachelor of Science degree in Management with a Minor in Art. I have over fifteen units in Art as a Minor. This includes watercolor and ceramics. I have taught Special Needs Adults as an Art Teacher at University of Arizona - though it was some years ago -and I have taught ceramics in Honolulu at Hickam Air Force Base. I qualified for each of these positions with my Minor degree in Art. I am most familiar with watercolor as a medium. I believe I would be helpful to elementary and middle school aged learners.

Phonics

Phonics as part of a reading program benefits early learners by integrating letter and sound recognition. Phonics is important to the early learner because it provides an opportunity for reading, vocabulary, comprehension and spelling. Letter and sound recognition develops through sight and sound relationship of phonics study. Phonics can be integrated into writing, spelling and reading in a natural learning progression. Learner's benefit in spelling, reading and comprehension. I have used phonics as a tutoring tool with young readers and writers and I believe that a consistent, systematic use, aids students in acquiring English reading/writing/comprehension proficiency, this including second language learners of English.

Public Speaking

I have several years experience in professional public speaking. First, as an Admissions Officer responsible for state-wide outreach to tribal schools (2002-2004). Second, as a Management major, which during the course of several years of study, public speaking and presentation was a program requirement. In addition, I worked as a Program Representative in the European Programs for University of Maryland and Boston University Graduate Programs. As such, regular extensive public speaking and presentation of programs was required. As a recent graduate of teaching English to speakers of other languages, I have several hours of public speaking in a classroom-style format, including presentation with PowerPoint. I am exceptionally trained to work with exchange students.

Study Skills

I have over nineteen years of study, first for a University of Maryland, B.S. in Management, with a Minor in Art, then in graduate school, for a Boston University Master's in Education, and finally at University of California, Santa Barbara for Professional Certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Each program required strong study skills to become successful. Assessment, goal-setting, organization, and understanding a student's needs are an essential part of student success through tutoring in study skills development.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
