I have over 30 years experience teaching at the elementary and middle school level.

For many years I worked with 2nd grade students teaching phonics, reading and elementary math, science and social studies. I loved the age and the subjects. I was known for making learning fun with hands on games and experiments.

More recently I have taught middle school, working in the areas of prealgebra and science. Here too I have really enjoyed the students and the challenge of the age group.

I have taught a wide range of student abilities from gifted to learning disabled and experienced success with all of my students.

In addition to classroom work I have worked in the education department of the zoo and a museum, taking children on fun trips and enriching learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I grew up loving American history. In addition to studying it in college, where I took over 15 units of US history, I have been to many historical sites and enjoy sharing the stories of those places with students. History has always come alive for me through biography and information about how common people were effected by events.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a credential in multiple subjects/elementary education and have taught k-6th grade for over 30 years. I spent most of that time teaching either k-2 or 6th grade. I love the challenge of teaching a wide variety of subjects. I am especially good at elementary math and at teaching beginning reading. I also can introduce children to beginning science with fun experiments and projects.

Elementary Math

Learning math can be fun but it is also a challenge. I use many hands on materials to build understanding of math concepts. I have innovative ways to teach math facts since they are often a building block to success in math. Finally, I have ways to help break down word problems that frustrate many students so that they can apply their skills and build confidence.

Elementary Science

Science is FUN!! I have taught science in the classroom with loads of easy and educational experiments. I've also taught science for the zoo and the natural history museum. I even took some students on a dig for fossils. I'll bring materials to you so that science becomes full of experiments.

ESL/ESOL

For several years I worked at a school affiliated with Scripps. I taught kindegarten in a setting that had the children of researchers from around the world. I taught their children English using drawing and manipulatives so that they associated vocabulary with real objects. Then we would move on to phonics so that these children could read by the end of kindergarten.

Now I work at a middle school with a huge ESL population. The skills I use are different. We work on writing skills, especially grammar, capitalization and punctuation. I still find that some of the vocabulary skills I used work with the very beginning students who have just arrived in America.

Phonics

Phonics is the study of sounds that are used to decode words. It starts with basic consonant and short vowel sounds. As students advance they work on blends, consonant digraphs such as th and ch. They continue with long vowels patterns like ai, ee and igh. Finally they learn the effect of syllables on sounds so they can sound out longer words. I taught Kindergarten to 2nd grade for 20 years and have taught all of this.

Social Studies

At the elementary level social studies starts with things like community helpers and people working in a community. It touches on elections. It also talks about goods and services as they relate to jobs in a community. As elementary school progresses it includes California history, American history and world history.
