Elementary (K-6th)

My qualifications include tutoring elementary students in all grades from first grade through sixth grade. My academic background from the University of California, San Diego, provided a strong foundation in methods/research for teaching reading and writing in all grade levels. Through the writing/reading process, students learn all skills including vocabulary, phonics, spelling, grammar, study skills, and handwriting. I have created/developed/implemented successful writing/reading programs for elementary students throughout San Diego County.

Reading

Helping students to improve their reading skills and watching them develop a joy for reading is one of my academic passions. I utilize many techniques to increase reading comprehension and retention. Some of these techniques include dialectical journals, note-taking, quick writing as well as many other techniques.

Study Skills

As an English teacher and tutor for many years, Study Skills have always been part of my curriculum. In the San Diego Area Writing Project at the University of California, San Diego, I was educated in Writing/Reading research and teaching techniques. The teaching methods included Study Skills
like dialectical journals, note-taking/note-making, clustering/ mapping, outlining and so many, many other techniques I have employed when teaching and tutoring.

There are many Study Skills I incorporate when tutoring my students in Reading. Some of these strategies include reading comprehension skills, metacognition, reflective writing, main idea/theme selecting and vocabulary.

I have worked with many students on the concept of time-management and timelines. I help them with timelines for completion of assignments, completion of reading textbooks/books and research material. I also help them in organizational skills involving their class materials such as notebooks and files.
