Hello, my name is Juan and I am an experienced tutor in all aspects of English as well as certain test preparation. Most recent, I was employed by International House New York, a branch of the International House World Organization, where I provided intensive English courses specifically to adults. I have experience in teaching Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced level of students of all ages, as well as experience in teaching Business English in a classroom environment, and much experience with one-to-one lessons in which I fully integrate the student into a course specifically designed for them. I also have experience with lessons focusing on foreign language exams, such as the TOEFL, IELTS, and the TOEIC. I am knowledgeable in all aspects of English grammar and I am able to transcend this to my students in an efficient manner. I have graduated from the Intensive CELTA Course Cambridge provides in Teaching House New York where I learned many types of teaching styles and approaches to teaching English as a Second Language, all of which I have successfully applied into my own lesson in the classroom and with the private tutoring lessons I have conducted. I am very comfortable in a teacher-student environment and have gained much valuable experience in student management, for example, grading my language to the appropriate level of the student, finding a balance between teacher and student talking time for assurance of a student-centered lesson, and applying various interactive and creative activities for my learners. I have also graduated from Florida State University with a degree in English and a minor in World History and spent much time abroad, all of which have made me a better instructor of the English language to foreigners. I had concentrated my degree on not only literature, but writing as well, which I believe has made me a better instructor of the language. Throughout my college career, I have become an expert in analyzing texts and writing specific, dense essays on any subject in various formats, such as MLA, Chicago Style, APA, and more. I have taken many upper-level writing courses, which include: Advanced Article and Essay Workshop and Advanced Fiction Workshop, the latter under the strict supervision of the Burroway Professor of English and Director of the Writing program at FSU, Mark Winegardner- a published author, best known for his work on the continuation of the Godfather series by Mario Puzzo. I will be able to teach you how to properly structure an article or essay and fully express your ideas in a successful manner. I also have much experience in creating presentations and delivering them to an audience in an appropriate manner. I am familiar with PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Word, as well as Garage Band, which I use to record my students. Along with having strong communication skills, I am hardworking, punctual and attentive, organized, competent, a team player with leadership qualities, friendly, adaptable, compliant towards authority, and respectful towards everyone. I am fluent in Spanish, could communicate in French, and currently at a beginner level in Latin. Concerning the expectations a student assumes from their prospective ESL Instructor, I share the qualities that it requires: professionalism, flexibility, patience, respect, organization, creativity, perseverance, and much enthusiasm. It is no secret that I am young, however, every student that has taken lessons from me will agree that I am good at what I do.
I was employed most recently by EC Miami as an ESL instructor as well as the school’s Designated School Official. During my time as DSO I learned much about the student visa process and how to guide people from all over the world through the immigration steps to get into the country, track attendance once they have arrived and aid them with questions concerning their visa privileges also serving as a guidance counselor for any student who may have an issue relating to their stay such as visa extensions, traveling with their student visa, while working closely with their sponsors to ensure that all parties are always well-informed. Some other duties included working to maintain all paperwork organized and up to date, advising teachers on student issues, resolve classroom scheduling issues, and upholding program policies. I also provided assistance to the Academic Director with program management, student evaluations, supervising & processing of placement tests, and placing students in class and daily administrative tasks as well as handled some of the administration duties like the weekly intake of new students & preparation of intake materials.
I have also worked at International House New York, a branch of the International House World Organization, where I provided intensive English courses ranging from Elementary to Advanced levels. I have been CELTA certified to teach English as a Second Language since 2010 and consider myself an expert in all aspects of the English language. I am capable of handling large groups in a classroom as well as one-to-one private lessons in which I fully integrate the student into a course specifically designed for their needs.
If desired, I could provide you with many professional references which all of which will be in agreement of my talent to teach.
At Teaching House New York, I have taken and successfully completed the Cambridge CELTA course which has provided me intensive training in teaching ESL/ESOL to adults. I am certified to teach English as a Second Language and can provide documentation of my training as well as my certificate earned from Cambridge.
Even though I teach English, my native language is Spanish. I understand the grammar of the language more than sufficiently to teach it. Last year, while in Lima, Peru, I took it upon myself to register and take post graduate level courses on difficult topics, all of which were conducted in Spanish.
