I love learning foreign languages and I want to transmit that love to you! Oral language is unique to human beings. I think it's fascinating how languages have developed over time and the differences between them from the alphabets they use to the grammar they've developed and their vocabulary and expressions.

I believe in using as much of the target language as possible when teaching. There's no sense me talking to you in English if I can say it/explain it in the language you want to learn. That's not to say I won't speak English as necessary but don't underestimate yourself and your ability to learn a language without using a lot of English.

We will have fun together! I will use aural, visual and kinesthetic techniques while teaching/tutoring you so that we find out what combination of learning modalities best suit you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have an M.A. in Linguistics which gives me excellent insight into the issues involved in teaching ESL/ESOL. I have taught ESL at the University of California - San Diego Extension, UC Davis, ELS Language Centers, Berlitz in the U.S. and France, and Embassy CES. I have also learned several languages myself so know what it's like trying to learn a new language. This makes me a very empathetic teacher.

French

I have a bachelor's degree in French Language and Institutions from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in Linguistics. During my undergraduate career, I spent my junior year in Paris, my dream come true! I also have a secondary teaching credential in French. I subsequently spent another summer in Caen in Normandy in an intensive French program for teachers. After I returned to the U.S., I taught French for 6 years in a college-prep high school, I've taught French for Berlitz in the U.S. and France, for Converse International School, Language Door, and I have substitute taught French at a community college. I speak French every day since my "significant other" is French.

Spanish

I have a Master's degree in Linguistics and a Bachelor's degree in French. I learn languages easily. I actually started learning Spanish before French. Although I don't have a degree in Spanish, I have participated in intensive Spanish language programs in Mexico, Spain, Guatemala, and Peru and have traveled extensively in Latin America including Argentina, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Uruguay improving my Spanish in each location. I am particularly good in helping beginning to intermediate students.

Outstanding French Tutor — Marion does a great job explaining concepts in a clear manner. She makes very efficient use of time and tailored a curriculum to meet my son’s needs. She answered questions completely and explained the French language in a way that helped him to understand new concepts easily. She is always positive and friendly. It has been a pleasure working with Marion this summer. I highly recommend her. ...
