A little bit about myself,

I am a 26 year old UCLA Biochemistry graduate who has been teaching and coaching math and science students for over seven years now. Above all else I believe in finding an outlet for one's creativity, and in learning the things that make people more effective in their everyday lives. I enjoy tutoring because I get to help students categorize knowledge in a way that makes it useful for any situation that may come up in life. While subject matter and classes come and go, the problem solving skills that a student learns today are part of the same framework that will help them build lives of their own one day.

As a tutor I am successful because I truly understand where students get stuck during their thought process. I do not assume a student has prior knowledge of a subject, and do not ever pass judgement if a certain concept or skill has not been picked up along the way. I am friendly and very approachable and always encourage students to tell me exactly what they are thinking. I don't want to know what they don't understand, I want to know what steps they have taken right up to the point where they get stuck, so that we can adapt the thought process and move past the roadblock.

I also believe that while there many ways to solve problems, students are much better off learning how to choose which way is the most effective for the current issue at hand. For example, sometimes I hear "I like to do it this way," when working through an assignment. If it's not the most efficient way to do the exercise, or if will make future concepts harder to learn, I show the student the more optimized way to do the problem, and tell them where and how it will help them in the future. If this means that I reveal a math shortcut a year early, that's okay with me!

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to schedule a lesson, or if you have any additional questions for me...

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

What can I say, I LOVE chemistry! It is a subject that most people dread when going through high school and college, but it comes to me more naturally than tying my shoes! As a tutor I show students the way that I see the world of chemistry, ultimately making a very abstract subject matter tangible for students to work with. Chemistry doesn't have to be hard and can actually be fun if taught the right way!

College Counseling

I am currently a college counselor, helping students brand themselves, find a college where they can be successful, and reduce the overall cost of college in the process.

Genetics

I studied molecular genetics as part of my rudimentary coursework at UCLA. From the onset of Mendelian Genetics, to the more complex advancements in gene technology, I can help students approach genetics problems in a way that makes sense. Topics of interest include: pedigree analysis, karyotyping, meiosis and mitosis and genetic orders that result from nondisjunctions, genetic engineering, ethics and a variety of other topics as well.

Nutrition

I had an advanced physiological science class at UCLA that focused on metabolism and and nutritional pathways in the body. I also took 7 different biochemistry courses that covered metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, as well as various trace elements that are required to optimize these processes.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry is one of those topics that students tend to dread in college. My approach to learning and teaching O-chem is maintaining a positive attitude toward learning and a willingness to put in the time and effort to master a brand new chemical language! No reaction is inherently too difficult to comprehend, and with the right practice problems, students will start to see O-chem as an art more than a tedious science!

Writing

“Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” -Anton Chekhov.

In addition to writing poetry and fiction, I enjoy collaborating with others on the process of their writing as well. I help students develop focus and clarity in their work, emphasizing that while there is no set formula for writing, it is possible to find and excel in one's own style.
