Education has always been an important aspect of my life. While in high school, I was in the International Baccalaureate program, which involved taking college level courses that transfer directly into college. I was involved in associated student body, band, and black student union. Despite the time consuming practices for concerts, parades, competitions and meetings, I was able to maintain an excellent GPA of about 3.7, allowing me to graduate with honors. After high school, I decided to pursue a career in music influencing me to stay local and attend Riverside City College. After obtaining an associate degree, I came to a drastic change of heart and decided to pursue the preferred, but harder career in science. I transferred to California State University with hopes of graduating with a bachelors of science in Biology. I’ve maintained a position on the college of natural sciences dean’s list since entering the school maintaining an average GPA of 3.7 since this past spring. I have also begun delving into research using Drosophila Melanogaster as a model organism to seek new treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease. Although education plays a significant role in my life, I am involved with other activities as well. I belong to the pre-dental club, a fairly new and developing club, which is directed towards preparing students for the graduate school application process. I volunteer my time at Cesar Chavez Middle School providing instruction for students in the drum line program 2-3 times as week. I truly enjoy the arts and notice the disappearance of art programs in public schools. Music was and still remains to be a special part of me. Unfortunately, some students don’t get to see the benefits of playing instruments due to so many budget cuts. I also spend time talking to youth about the benefits of pursuing degrees in science through the PRISM program. This involves doing extended chemical research in the summer and sharing this information with youth as a means of providing examples of the type of work involved in scientific work. I’m a firm believer in setting positive examples for today’s youth so that we can reinforce their opportunities and resources in the future. My tutoring methods will be very similar to the way I teach my colleagues, which is at a digestible rate and in an organized and systematic way. I maintain an open mind, remain patient, and make sure the experience is fun. I will do my best to make sure concepts are understood before moving on to further material as well as develop study mechanisms such as flash cards, schematics, and diagrams as resources to assist with conceptualization.

Biology

While attending Riverside City College my focus was in biology. I've taken upper level cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, general biology, and zoology. In addition, I also started research on Alzheimer's disease using Drosophila Melanogaster as a model organism at CSUSB. I plan on graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2015.

General Music

I have an AA in music from Riverside City College. I've also Performed in many professional percussion ensembles such as the DCI Blue Devils, Gold Drum and Bugle Corps, Pulse Percussion and the RCC Winter Drum line.
