I love to teach! I've taught Aids Prevention Education, Nutrition and Bio-Intensive Agricultural in rural villages in Tanzania. I've taught remedial grammar to 800 freshmen Zulus, Xosas and Suthos who sang "Amazing Grace" so beautifully it made me cry as an English teaching Fellow at the Northern Transvaal Technikon in South Africa. I've taught Beginning English to children who put frogs in my purse, Intermediate English to teen-age girls who only wanted to sing love songs and Advanced English to adults who lived to dance in Costa Rica. With the aid of a rented espresso coffeemaker I've taught pronunciation to Brazilians in an 8AM class, vocabulary to Koreans on the ski slopes, fluency to Japanese in shopping malls,and American Culture to Germans and Argentines attending the S.F. Symphony and the Opera in U.C. Berkeley's Intensive English Program. And most recently, I've taught Survival English to newly arrived refugees at the International Rescue Committee in Oakland, ranking high in my all-time heart-warming,challenging teaching experiences....shy, smiling Somali women wrapped in kangas with a baby or two tucked in, Eritrean graduate engineers who were taken to the desert to develop an irrigation system and ended up escaping the prison they were thrown into for requesting food and water, Afghani families with educated sons and illiterate daughters, Karan Burmese rice farmers so polite they never stop bowing and Sri Lankans with names like Selvarajan Rajahreuben.
I feel confident that whatever the age or the level of English of the student, I can help his/her English improve! I received my Masters in TESOL (TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES) at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt. and appreciate the outstanding training I received there.
My basic teaching philosophy is that all lessons should be student-centered. I rarely use textbooks (except for reference, of course!), but prefer to prepare my own teaching materials tailored to the needs and interests of the student. I try my best to integrate all the skills into lesson plans, i.e., grammar, fluency, pronunciation, reading, listening, and writing. I believe that grammar is the key to making steady progress in learning English, and it should be fun with lots of games and inter-active practice activities!
There's nothing more exciting than the "ah-ha" moments when a student understands a concept! I would work hard to help my student have as many of those moments as possible.
