Hi there! First of all, thank you for reading up on me! I hope that I am what you are looking for.
I am a university graduate, and have worked as a tutor since September 2009, and have also been a substitute teacher for over three years. I have experience in the classroom setting, and one-on-one, in-home tutoring as well.
I have tutored in English language arts and in various subjects in math.
When it comes to English grammar and spelling, I can be very picky and persistent in making the grammar rules stick. In order to help students remember rules or "tricks" to spelling mishaps, I make a relation between the word(s) the students have trouble with and something in their everyday life which helps them remember when writing and/or taking exams.
I encourage taking time to read on a regular basis in order to get acquainted with writing structures; for vocabulary improvements as well as building a wider vocabulary; for developing comprehension skills and feeding the imagination.
I am fluent in Spanish (reading and writing) and can help in comprehension as well as with speaking and writing. I am not ashamed of knowing or speaking Spanish (like many other native speakers are), and I believe in being around Spanish-speaking as much as possible in order to learn the language.
As far as music goes, I know how to play the saxophone. I learned when I was 12, and played it throughout high school. Once you learn how to play the saxophone, you never forget -- it's the easiest instrument to pick up and learn how to play!
Math troubles? If you are having trouble with math at an elementary level, whether it's learning skip-counting, adding, subtracting, multiplication tables, division, fractions- I can help. I have taught the various aspects of math and I can help you memorize how to approach these areas. I can help you with visuals as well as coming up with word problems relating to something you know about (money, time, amounts, pizza, pies, anything!) to make a relation between that and the unknown.
I have helped many students achieve higher grades in their classes, and I hope to get a chance to help you solve your problems!
