Hi folks-

My name is Ray D. and I have been tutoring, primarily in Elementary Mathematics, for more than five years. I use a variety of materials, depending upon the needs of the student. I use manipulatives as an entry to new topics, literature for those who respond to books, and worksheets when the time is right.
I have been an elementary teacher for 12 years. Along with "general studies" in 1st, 2nd, and 4th grades, I have taught math in all grades from first to sixth. My tutoring experience has normally been with students who lack confidence more than they lack mathematical skills. I try to make the teaching environment fun and relaxing.

I believe that any student who feels that math is too "difficult", or even scary, just has an extra obstacle to overcome. That is why I prefer a relaxed atmosphere in which to build the confidence of the student.

Taking a basic problem like "3X + 6 = 12", for example, narrow down what a possible answer could be. Is "1" too small or too big? Then try "10", until we get close enough to try solving.

Recently, my 2nd grade class worked on using double consonants. The lesson involved a simple rule (we don't worry about exceptions with the younger grades):
A short vowel word gets a double consonant when you add -ed or -ing.
A long vowel word gets a single consonant when adding -ed or -ing.

The example used involves two words, "hop" and "hope."
