Dear Students and Parents,
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Norm L., and I am a former director of a college writing center which served international and domestic students in composition and literature classes at Foothill Junior College. I hold an undergraduate degree in Humanities, and presently I am pursuing a graduate degree in English Composition at San Francisco State University.
I am primarily a composition tutor for college level students which means that I can help you develop your skills as an essayist. Essay writing, however, covers a broad range of topics, and my background in Humanities gives me the breadth required to discuss many subjects, for example, cinema, literature, and painting.
Since I, too, am a student my schedule is flexible, and I am willing to travel to a school or public library to tutor my students. These locations I prefer because they are public and reasonably quiet.
Tutoring, for me, complements class instruction by giving students the chance to pose questions they may not have asked in class and to develop their ideas in a non-judgmental environment. Providing this opportunity lies at the core of my philosophy for tutoring, yet successful tutoring involves much more.
Writing is a thinking process, and the tutoring of students requires thought and knowledge from both the student and tutor. The student needs to think about the skills they are trying to develop, and the tutor needs to know about the components of writing (structure, tone, audience, etc.) and think about the best way to help the student understand and apply these components. To initiate this thinking process, I ask my prospective students these questions:
Which course (or courses) are you taking?
What are the texts you are using?
What are your goals in this class (or classes)?
What are your expectations from tutoring?
From these questions I can customize my role in the tutoring process so that my tutoring should complement a student’s coursework and help fulfill a student’s goals. Though I cannot guarantee passing grades for any particular student, I feel that generally if a student works diligently and has a true interest in succeeding then tutoring will probably help a student move toward and accomplish goals.
The ethics of tutoring also guide my actions. I am always willing to discuss ideas with my students though I have never and will never write for them. Additionally, I view all instruction–including tutoring–as a serious responsibility. Consequently, as a tutor, I am available only for tutoring; counseling and other matters, I leave to counselors and other professionals.
Well, now that you have read about my views and techniques as well as about my background, I hope that you are informed well enough to choose the best tutor for you.
