Ph.D. Tutor in Languages, Literature and Testing

I have been tutoring privately since 1997 and have worked with all ages and levels. Prior to going to graduate school, I worked for Ivy West Educational Services, where I taught English/Language Arts (SAT/ACT Reading and Writing, ISEE/SSAT Reading)Spanish and, of course, French. I have a Ph.D. in French from UC Davis with an emphasis in Second Language Learning, and have taught French at all levels, from kindergarten to college. I remember how and why I used to struggle with a subject when I was in high school, and have used that knowledge to craft an understanding and patient approach to help the students not only learn the material, but to comprehend it and ultimately, enjoy it. My approaches vary based on the student's needs and progress, and I do not hesitate to adapt to an individual student's learning style. French

I have a Ph.D. in French and second language learning, and can teach grammar, writing, conversation and literature. I have 8 years of teaching experience at the college level and can prepare students to take the AP exam in either French literature or French language.

Writing

I taught SAT composition and grammar skills for 5 years prior to entering graduate school. I have published 2 articles in scholarly journals, as well as published a book, and am currently working on a manuscript. I can explain grammar and writing conventions "in plain English" without the use of technical terms or jargon.

Japanese

I have a masters degree in Japanese and can tutor language, literature and culture. My innovative ways of explaining the nuances of the language can help to simplify complex concepts. I can also prepare you for the AP exam in Japanese or provide conversation practice for upcoming trips.

SAT Writing

I worked for Sylvan Learning Systems as an SAT Verbal Skills tutor for 5 years, prior to entering graduate school. I am familiar with the test structure and strategies for beating the questions, even if you aren't quite sure how to answer the question. I am also a published writer with several articles that have appeared in scholarly specialty journals.
