Algebra 1
As a 25+ year statistical consultant I've found that most issues with statistics arise from poor algebra skills.
To be an effective statistical consultant one must combat math-anxiety in its many forms, and come to learn how to teach basic mathematics along with more advanced but related issues having to do with issues in every day applications of applied mathematics.
Biology
Former Marine Biologist and marine Science Instructor at The Newfound Harbor Marine Institute on Big Pine Key, FL
Current volunteer educator at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA
Biostatistics
I have a BS In Genetics from a Top-10 public university, an MS in Statistics form a Top-10 statistics graduate department, and I have taught Marine Science for over 30 years.
I have worked as a statistical consultant on projects across industries as varied as marine mammalogy, pharmaceutical research, and epidemiology.
Computer Programming
Worked as Scientific Programmer at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, a global weather prediction laboratory, on the campus of Floridat State University.
Since then I;ve gone one to write analysis code in;
FORTRAN
LISP
Objective-C
Basic
Visual Basic
Turbo Pascal
Dbase III+
PStat
Perl
Nawk/Awk
Sed
RegEx
SAS
TransatSQL
Pig Latin
HIve
Computer Science
Managed a software development group as Analytics Architect at Macromedia, Inc., eventually seeing that product sold to IBM where he was employed as Statistician/Sr. Software Engineer for 5 years.
He now runs a small firm named heur-e-ka LLC , building and marketing SaaS software that reads text and classifies its content for topics and emotional portent wighted by degree and valance.
He has written programs in FORTRAN, Lisp, Basic, Visual Basic, Turbo-Pascal, Objective-C, C++, Perl and a host of other 4GL languages since 1981.
Discrete Math
With an MS in Statistics I have a career full of discrete data modeling like predicting events, days until an intervention will occur, waiting lines, etc.
I've studied, applied, and taught discrete statistical techniques like the chi-squared test, Bayesian probability, counting theory, Markov Chains, Box-Jenkins Timer Series models, etc, all of which require training and skill with discrete mathematics.
Analysis with discrete numbers requires a deep understanding of the discrete numbers that are far different than the classify irrational number system that comprises algebra, calculus, and probability.
Fortran
Took two FORTRAN classes (IV & V) in Graduate School.
Worked for two years as a Scientific Programmer writing global weather prediction programs in FORTRAn of several different CDC computers (Cyber 730, 760, and 2000-Series [among the first super-computers]) at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute on the Florida State University campus.
Genetics
I have a B.S. in Genetics from the University of Illinois.
Molecular Genetics, Biogeography, and the Evolution of Animal Behavior were among my specialities. In that regard, I was honored to meet my longtime hero, Harvard's EO Wilson, in the Fall of 2010.
We spent quite a while discussing our careers and it turns out that when I was young Marine Biologist on Big Pine Key, FL fresh out of my undergraduate training he was taking his sabbatical on that same island studying his lifelong model of the evolution of animal behavior; his beloved ants!
Microsoft PowerPoint
I have used PowerPoint as an analyst, executive, and active public speaker for years!
Prealgebra
With a master's degree in Statistics and extensive graduate level training in Statistical Consulting I have found myself having to tutor my clients in algebra and pre-algebra, even basic arithmetic sometimes, to be able to help them with their statistical issues.
Probability
M.S. - Statistics from the #8 ranked Statistics Graduate Dept in the USA at the time!
SAS
20+ years of SAS programming and analysis in a variety of academic and business settings; demographics, telephony, search and recommendation engines, human decision making software.
Classes taken at SAS Institute;
SAS Macro Programming I - 4 days; Cary, NC
SAS Macro Programming II - 1 day; Cary, NC
SAS Enterprise Miner - 3 days - San Francisco, CA
SAS Text Miner - 3 days - San Francisco, CA
SAS Survival Analysis - 3 days; Irvine, CA
I've licensed my own personal copy of SAS 9.1+ for over 5 years now and am an expert at applying the SAS platform

Volleyball
I played USVBA volleyball at the "A" level in the Florida Keys and then went on to compete in "AA" tournaments in the USVBA's Sunshine State Region at Florida State University and the Garden-Empire Region in Bergen County, NJ.
I was President of the FSU Men's Volleyball Club one season and refereed for three seasons of Intramural volleyball there. I first learned the rules and principles of how to coach and play the game from Dr. Ari Selinger at the University of Illinois in a PE Class there.
Selinger was the Head Coach of both the USA Women's National and Olympic Teams (silver medalists in the 1984 Olympics) and the Netherlands Men's National and Olympic Teams (silver medalists in the 1992 Olympics).
Water Polo
I played on the University of Illinois Men's Water Polo Club from 1973-77, competing against Big Ten clubs. We also played AAU teams from across the Midwest, including the AAU Women's National Team (The Cincinnati Pepsi Marlins).
Zoology
I am a former marine biologist that now works on the construction of taxonomies and ontologies. Zoology is chiefly preoccupied with the differentiation of the anatomical, physiological, and ecological differences that distinguish one species of animal from another, hence the science of classification and knowledge about how all those biological traits differ is one of its key specialization.
