My tutoring approach emanates from a boundless curiosity about the world. I'll extend that to my students by finding examples and problem sets that they tell me are relevant to their own interests.
From sports, to politics, to business, to art, to high-tech, to the physical and social sciences there are endless numerical and inferential examples that will help me curtail our tutoring sessions to each student's specific interests. Statistics textbooks are full of dry, boring, and poorly situated problem sets that tend to turn students off, not appeal to their own tastes, hence their ability to both understand the material as well as to extend those lessons to their subsequent academic and professional experiences.
Having worked as a marine biologist, social.Net demographer, applied mathematician in several business domains, scientific programmer in a weather prediction lab, software engineer, and most recently as a human cognitive scientist within the real-time-predictions world of the internet I am confident that I can appeal to each student's specific interests while encompassing the requisite material that will allow them to extend these statistical and probabilistic lessons to their coursework.
Part of my recent endeavor has been to build mathematical models of critical thinking processes, and I will seek to help my students develop that skill-set in their own problem solving approach as well. Most problem sets in statistics and probability are much less intimidating when you realize that the data you need to solve the problem is often given to you in ways that might disguise them from those that see them as mere mathematical exercises. Fostering ways to get the student to think about the answers sought in the context of the information given will be a point of emphasis in all my tutoring sessions.
Here are some examples of my own background and interests that may serve to inform prospective students and their parents of the topical areas that have excited and motivated me throughout my career.
